Abstract The Law concerning industrial physicians, safety engineers and other specialists in OSH (short title: Law on occupational safety) became effective on 1 Dec. 1974 in the Federal Republic of Germany. It regulates the hiring of industrial physicians and OSH specialists in private and public enterprises. This publication demonstrates the effects the employment of these specialists had on the improvement of working conditions. Contents: Conditions of employment and duties of industrial physicians and OSH specialists, hours of work as a function of the number of employees, professional independence, collaboration with management and employee organisations, collaboration between industrial physicians and safety specialists, safety committees, intervention by government, exemptions, interplant services, responsibilities. Regulatory texts are given in full. Improvements in working conditions due to the employment of industrial physicians and OSH specialists are emphasised.
