Abstract These directives (effective 1 Jan. 1979) apply to all operations involving the use of asbestos or materials containing asbestos: definitions; maximum allowable concentration of asbestos dust (2 fibres/cm3); monitoring asbestos dust levels in workplace air; restrictions on use of asbestos (use in spray guns prohibited, substitution of other substances); protection from dust exposure; storage, transport and opening of bags containing asbestos; demolition of old lagging; brake-lining maintenance; rules for handling products containing asbestos, for asbestos waste disposal and workplace cleaning; personal protective equipment (dust masks); changing rooms; alerting workers to health hazards; inspection.
