Abstract This Resolution calls for urgent action at the national and Community level in the following fields: research on occupational accident and disease aetiology; protection against hazardous substances (warning, information, establishment of a common methodology, exposure limits, sampling requirements, measuring methods, protective action, etc. for asbestos, arsenic, cadmium, lead, chlorinated solvents, pesticides, herbicides, carcinogens, etc.); machine guarding; monitoring and inspection (improvement of human attitudes); outlining information schemes at Community level. An Annex fills in the details of the action programme consisting of 6 initiatives to be taken at Community level, which are described: general objectives; incorporation of safety aspects at the design, production and operation stages (planning and layout of equipment, work organisation, manufacture and use of machinery, equipment and tools, handling of dangerous substances and preparations); exposure limits to pollutants and harmful substances in workplaces (non-ionising radiation, harmonisation of exposure limits, directives on pollutants, carcinogens, toxicological evaluation, etc.); more extensive monitoring of workers' safety and health (industrial toxico-vigilance, inspections); aetiology, assessment of occupational hazards; coordination and promotion of research; development of awareness by education and training.
