Abstract The amendments to the Regulations introduced by this Order affect the provisions concerning particles or fibres of the following substances which may cause physical or physico-chemical damage on inhalation: free silica (prohibition of use of sand or other particulate matter containing more than 1% free silica for abrasive blasting or descaling, unless the operation is hermetically enclosed); asbestos (prohibition of manual handling or touching free asbestos in bulk, and of using asbestos in spraying or painting, thermal insulation, sound isolation, wall coating, manufacture of tubing, gaskets, etc.); mandatory industrial hygiene facilities for worker protection; cleanliness and housekeeping; enclosure of operations; maximum allowable concentration of airborne asbestos: 2 fibres/mL as average time-weighted TLV for a 4-h period (0.2 fibres in the case of crocidolite); measurement of concentrations; record-keeping; worker information; precautions to be observed in vehicle maintenance and repair, and in demolition work.
