Abstract The directives are intended to guide plant management and safety services on the links between the legislation concerning toxic substances and the law concerning the working environment. Contents: rules for identifying substances according to the legislation concerning toxic substances (symbols and warning captions giving information on hazards, precautions, storage, permits to buy toxic substances); occupational safety and health (OSH) rules for using the products in workplaces, according to the legislation concerning the workplace environment; examples of OSH action to be taken according to identification codes (substances liable to explode in certain conditions, substances liable to cause fires, substances reacting with others, toxic substances, irritants, corrosives, etc.). Annex: warning symbols (illustrated).
