R.231 of the French Labour Code (Title III, Book II), lays down general rules, standing orders and terms of reference for the establishment, membership and activities of plant safety committees: types of undertaking to which the regulations apply; membership of committees, scope of their activities (analysis of occupational hazards, investigation of serious occupational accidents and diseases; inspection of establishments, initiating action on occupational safety and health (OSH) questions, advisory functions, etc.); periodicity of committee meetings. Other provisions concern safety training and the role of the OSH committees in training activities: training objectives; training of certain categories of staff (machine operators, workers using or processing chemicals, those engaged in materials handling, driving vehicles, operating lifting equipment, those in contact with dangerous animals); cases where special action must be taken regarding safety training (where new production processes are commenced, or existing ones modified, where new jobs are created or existing ones modified, etc.); organisation of safety training (participation of safety officers, plant physician, reports, languages used, employer's duties, etc.).
