Abstract This Labour Code (Official Gazette, Bahrain, 15 July 1976, No.1184, Supplement, 54p.), which does not apply to seafarers, covers inter alia hours of work, vacation leave, conditions for the employment of women and young persons, employment of vocationally rehabilitated disabled persons, and compensation for occupational accidents and diseases. Chapter 12 (conditions of work) requires the employer, before engaging a worker, to inform him of any occupational hazards and of the mandatory safety measures, makes provision for occupational safety and health (OSH) regulations to be issued by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, and authorises the said Ministry to order the closure of establishments where OSH regulations are infringed, with payment in full of the remuneration of workers laid off during such closure. Provisions are made concerning first-aid facilities, plant occupational health services, meals, drinking water and social welfare services.
