Abstract This Directive aims at uniformity of safety signs in all workplaces in the 9 member states of the European Communities. It does not apply to signs used in rail, road, inland waterway, marine or air transport, signs for commercial use of dangerous substances and preparations, or in coal mines. Member states are required to adopt and publish by 1 Jan. 1979 the measures necessary to comply with this Directive, and to apply them from 1 Jan. 1981 at the latest. Definitions; measures for implementation of the Directives and establishment of a Committee of Representatives of Member States for this purpose. Annexes: basic principles of the system of safety signs (safety colours and their meanings, contrasting colours and symbol colours; geometrical form of signs, with meanings; combinations of shapes and colours, with meanings; design of safety signs (a complete set of prohibitory, warning, mandatory, informational and emergency signs, yellow/black danger identification, etc. are illustrated).
