Abstract These directives (entry into force: 1 Mar. 1975) contain an introduction on health damage due to vinyl chloride, followed by sections on the industrial uses of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), and employer's and workers' obligations. A number of rules follow, prescribing: (1) maximum permissible exposure (8-h weighted average TLV = 5ppm); (2) regular monitoring of atmospheric VCM concentrations; (3) measures for reducing atmospheric VCM concentrations; (4) personal protective equipment (respirators, skin protection); (5) hazardous operations; (6) worker training and information; (7) warning labels and notices; (8) health protection (periodic and pre-employment medical examinations; personal exposure records); (9) periodic reports to the labour inspectorate.
