Abstract A review of the health hazards due to smoke, gases (carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone) and ultraviolet and infrared radiation emitted during the MIG and TIG processes is followed by an outline of prevention measures to be taken at the welding site: general ventilation; local exhaust ventilation (illustrated by several examples of devices attached to the welding bench or gun); use of filter glass spectacles (with details of the light transmission factor to be chosen according to the welding current intensity). Undertakings are required to employ competent persons to ensure that the measures recommended are observed.
