Abstract This Ordinance, which enters into force on 1 May 1976, prescribes new rights for workers and contains many new provisions concerning conditions of work. The term "workplace" is defined; it does not apply to places where commercial travellers are employed, to wholesale or retail markets, or to public road, rail or air transport services. A number of general provisions are followed by more detailed ones concerning premises, paths, passageways etc., and the equipment of buildings (ventilation, temperature, lighting, floors and walls, windows, automatic doors, prevention of falls, protection against fires, gases and dust, noise control, communication ways, escalators, loading ramps), special premises (surface, volume and equipment of workplaces, rest and leisure premises and facilities, washroom and toilet facilities, first-aid stations). A chapter is devoted to conditions to be observed in open-air workplaces. Other chapters are concerned with the application of the Ordinance in open-air work sites such as building sites, etc., open-air sales booths in front of shops and on board vessels when navigating or berthed within German territorial waters.
