Abstract The Convention, adopted on 24 June 1974, contains provisions on the following subjects: periodic determination of carcinogenic substances and agents; replacement by non-carcinogenic substances and agents; measures to protect workers against the risks of exposure; information of workers on the dangers involved; medical examinations, biological or other tests; various legal aspects. The Recommendation, also adopted on 24 June 1974, supplements the Convention. It makes recommendations, inter alia, as to the measures to be adopted where complete elimination of a carcinogenic substance or agent is not possible; it makes provision for exemptions from prohibition to use these substances or agents and contains recommendations concerning medical examinations and biological or other tests, establishing and maintaining a system for the prevention and control of occupational cancer, information and education.
