(In Spanish) Internet: This article shows that the number of accidents in a working population is related to the type of work, the workload and the level of risk of the work, and lays down the equations that link these factors. The objective of accident prevention is to decrease the number of accidents without decreasing the volume of work. Therefore the risks related to the work have to be reduced. The workload also has an influence on the number of accidents; this factor needs to be taken into account to avoid wrong conclusions when analysing statistical data. (75938)
CIS 00-1587 Reduction of occupational accidents in the autonomous region of Aragon - "Project 677". (Spanish: Reducción de la siniestralidad laboral en la Comunidad Autónoma de Aragón - "Proyecto 677") Prevención, trabajo y salud, 1999, No.2, p.13-20. Illus. (In Spanish) Internet: The occupational safety and health authorities of the autonomous region of Aragon in Spain has implemented a project aiming at reducing the number of occupational accidents. A group of 677 enterprises are included, representing 1.7% of the region's enterprises. These enterprises had 32% of the accidents in the region even though they employ only 9.7% of the workers. An investigation was carried out for each company to determine the main causes of accidents and the level of compliance with prevention directives. Enterprises are regularly visited to control implementation of prevention measures. Comparing a company's accident rate with the mean rate for its activity sector is an effective way to increase awareness. This project, aimed at encouraging occupational safety management has already shown positive results: the accident rate for first quarter of 1999 has been reduced by 19.5% compared the same period of previous year. CIS 00-1604 Occupational exposures and squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and oesophagus: A case-control study in Sweden. Gustavsson P., Jakobsson R., Johansson H., Lewin F., Norell S., Rutkvist L.E., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.393-400. 27 ref. (In English) Internet: This community-based case-referent study was initiated to investigate aetiological factors for squamous cell carcinoma of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The study was based on all Swedish men aged 40-79 living in two regions of Sweden during 1988-90. Exposure to asbestos was associated with an increased risk of laryngeal cancer, and a dose-response relation was present. The RR was 1.8 in the highest exposure group. More than eight years of exposure to welding fumes was associated with an increased risk of pharyngeal cancer (RR=2.3 (1.1 to 4.7)), and laryngeal cancer (RR=2.0). There were indications of a dose-response for duration of exposure. Associations were also found for high exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and oesophageal cancer (RR=1.9). Exposure to wood dust was associated with a decreased risk of cancer at the studied sites. The study indicates that welding may cause an increased risk of pharyngeal as well as laryngeal cancer. The findings corroborate an association between exposure to PAHs and oesophageal cancer. (75736)
CIS 00-1605 The epidemiology of occupational contact dermatitis. Diepgen T.L., Coenraads P.J., International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, Nov. 1999, Vol.72, No.8, p.496-506. Illus. 75 ref. (In English) Internet: Occupational contact dermatitis ranks first of all occupational diseases in many countries. The incidence rate is believed to be around 0.5-1.9 cases per 1,000 full-time workers per year. Epidemiological studies play an important role in observing disease trends, analysing risk factors, and monitoring the effect of preventive measures. This review article highlights the lack of reliable epidemiologic data on occupational contact dermatitis and the difficulties of such studies. The following issues are highlighted: case ascertainment and bias, the distribution of allergic and irritant contact dermatitis in the working population, the interrelationship between exogenous (allergens, irritants) and endogenous factors, the prognosis, the social and economic impact, and the need for intervention studies. CIS 00-1606 Work-related upper-extremity disorders: Prospective evaluation of clinical and functional outcomes. Pransky G., Benjamin K., Himmelstein J., Mundt K., Morgan W., Feuerstein M., Koyamatsu K., Hill-Fotouhi C., Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Oct. 1999, Vol.41, No.10, p.884-892. 30 ref. (In English) Internet: The purpose of this study was to investigate long-term effectiveness of various interventions in patients with chronic, persistent work-related upper-extremity disorders focussing on outcomes associated with work status and functional capacity. A questionnaire was administered to 112 patients who had participated in a previous study. The efficacy of different treatments was examined. No positive relationship was found between these measures and employment status, self-reported change in the disorder or improvement in functional status. Significant negative relationships were found between surgery, psychotherapeutic intervention and outcomes. This may be due to a selection bias toward the more chronic and severely disabled patients. However, the relative ineffectiveness of intensive interventions such as surgery in improving the work and health status of chronically symptomatic work-related upper-extremity patients cannot be overlooked. CIS 00-1607 Study on musculoskeletal complaints involving the back, neck and upper limbs. Chan O.Y., Ho S.F., Singapore Medical Journal, 1998, Vol.39, No.8, p.363-367. 14 ref. (In English) Internet: A questionnaire survey was conducted by mail among 155 doctors to determine the nature and extent of musculoskeletal aches and pains among their patients. Information was recorded for all patients aged 15 years and above presenting with aches or pains in the back, neck or upper limbs, as the main complaint or as one of the presenting symptoms. During the survey period, total attendance was 35,010, of which 3.9% presented symptoms and 1.8% had work-related complaints. The commonest site affected was the back (55.7%), followed by the neck (21.4%) and shoulders (19.2%). A higher proportion of males than females reported back complaints with the reverse for complaints involving hands/wrists and arm/forearms. Among employed patients, 51.3% had work-related symptoms and 54.4% were given medical leave. Production workers had the highest proportion of work-related symptoms while service workers had the highest proportion given medical leave. (75760)
CIS 00-1608 Lung and bladder cancer in a Norwegian municipality with iron and steel producing industry: Population based case-control studies. Grimsrud T.K., Langseth H., Engeland A., Andersen A., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.387-392. Illus. 38 ref. (In English) Internet: To investigate the influence of occupation on lung and bladder cancer among men in a Norwegian municipality where an iron and steel plant constitutes the major industry, a population-based case-control study was performed based on lung and bladder cancer cases. Information on occupations and smoking habits was collected through interviews and from personnel files. An odds ratio for lung cancer of 2.9 was associated with exposure to PAHs. Increased risk of lung cancer was associated with work experience in the pig iron department at the ironworks. A non-significant OR of 1.8 was associated with exposure to asbestos. Bladder cancer was not associated with exposure to PAHs at the iron, steel and coke plant, or with experience at any of the production departments at the plant. One fifth of the lung cancer cases were attributed to exposure to PAHs or asbestos. More than 80% of the cases of lung cancer were attributed to tobacco smoking. The cancer risk in the pig iron department may have been due to a combination of exposures to PAH, asbestos and dust of mixed composition. (75735)

CIS 00-1610 Association between musculoskeletal pain in Japanese construction workers and job, age, alcohol consumption and smoking. Ueno S., Hisanaga N., Jonai H., Shibata E., Kamijima M., Industrial Health, Oct. 1999, Vol.37, No.4, p.449-456. Illus. 37 ref. (In English) Internet: A cross-sectional epidemiologic study was conducted to determine the prevalence of self-reported musculoskeletal pain (MSP) in construction workers and identify associations between MSP and job, age, alcohol consumption and smoking. Risk factors for total pain and for relatively severe pain in the hand/arm (RS-HAP), shoulder, and low-back (RS-LBP) were estimated by multiple logistic regression analysis. The results showed that musculoskeletal pain was significantly associated with age, and that the odds ratios (ORs) for relatively severe musculoskeletal pain increased almost linearly with age. Regarding the occupation, compared with architects whose work is presumed to be sedentary, almost all ORs for non-sedentary construction jobs were significantly high. Current smokers of 20 cigarettes a day or more had significantly higher ORs for RS-HAP and RS-LBP than for persons who never smoked. (75729)
CIS 00-1611 Prevalence of work related musculoskeletal disorders in active union carpenters. Lemasters G.K., Atterbury M.R., Booth-Jones A.D., Bhattacharya A., Ollila-Glenn N., Forrester C., Forst L., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.421-427. 26 ref. (In English) Internet: To determine the prevalence and risk factors for work-related musculoskeletal disorders among union carpenters, a detailed questionnaire on musculoskeletal symptoms and work history was administered to 522 carpenters. The symptom questions assessed if carpenters experienced pain, numbness or tingling in a particular body region. A subset of this group then received a physical examination of the upper extremities and knees. Upper extremity disorders were the most prevalent work-related musculoskeletal disorders reported among all carpenters. Drywall or ceiling activities involve a considerable amount of repetitive motion and awkward postures often with arms raised holding heavy dry walls in place, whereas form work is notable for extensive lumbar flexion and had the two highest rates of work-related musculoskeletal disorders. The psychosocial element of job control was associated with both upper and lower extremity disorders. These union carpenters, who were relatively young, already were experiencing considerable work-related physical problems. (75740)

CIS 00-1613 "Eczema school" to improve compliance in an occupational dermatology clinic. Kalimo K., Kautiainen H., Niskanen T., Niemi L., Contact Dermatitis, Dec. 1999, Vol.41, No.6, p.315-319. 29 ref. (In English) Internet: From 1990 a trained nurse has been employed at the Department of Dermatology of a leading Finnish hospital to inform patients about skin care, allergen avoidance and skin protection. To find out the possible benefits of this patient education, a questionnaire was sent out to 540 patients who had been diagnosed with an occupational skin disease. 424 patients returned the questionnaire, 252 of whom had been examined before 1990 and 172 later. It appeared that when the diagnosis had been irritant contact dermatitis without allergens found, the prognosis was significantly better among those who had received this "extra education" and none had persistent dermatitis. Patients with contact allergy to metals or synthetic resins had also managed better, as compared to those who had received traditional treatment. Generally, the patients were satisfied with the additional extra information provided by the nurse. (75721)
CIS 00-1614 Development and evaluation of a quality assessment instrument for occupational physicians. van der Weide W.E., Verbeek J.H.A.M., van Dijk F.J.H., Hulshof C.T.J., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.375-382. 72 ref. (In English) Internet: A review of the literature was conducted in order to develop a method for the assessment of the quality of occupational rehabilitation for workers with low back pain. The method was applied to health care and university workers with low back pain who were rehabilitated by their occupational physicians. Assessment of quality of care is regarded as a four-step approach. Firstly, guidelines should be developed and implemented. Secondly, indicators for quality and criteria to demarcate good and deviant quality were derived from the guidelines. Thirdly, a method for data collection was chosen. Finally, quality was scored. For occupational rehabilitation, there was some deviance from the guidelines for most cases, especially in continuity of care with a deviant rate of 47%. Other indicators deviated from 1.4%-17.4%. Assessing the quality of the process of occupation health care with this method is an asset to present methods, but more specific criteria are needed for a more sensitive assessment. (75733)

(In English) Internet: Upper-extremity musculoskeletal pains or disorders (MSDs) account for a significant number of work-related illnesses in the US workforce. In 1995, an aircraft manufacturer established a unique risk management programme based on the individual risk assessment of newly hired employees. The MSD intervention programme was designed to prospectively evaluate each new employee for their individual risk of developing MSDs in the workplace. Before job placement, individuals at higher risk were assigned to a period of transitional work. During the four years of the programme, workers' compensation cost decreases per year were 16%, 3%, 24%, and 12% respectively, while work hours increased by 56%. (75751)

CIS 00-1618 Job characteristics as predictors of neck pain - A 4-year prospective study. Eriksen W., Natvig B., Knardahl S., Bruusgaard D., Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Oct. 1999, Vol.41, No.10, p.893-902. 35 ref. (In English) Internet: Data from a community-based 4-year prospective study were used to investigate job characteristics as predictors of neck pain. Of 1,791 working responders who completed a questionnaire in 1990, 1,429 returned a second questionnaire 4 years later. In responders without neck pain during the previous 12 months in 1990, the "little influence on own work situation" factor predicted neck pain during the previous 12 months and previous 7 days in 1994 after adjustment for a series of potential confounders. In responders with neck pain in 1990, the "little influence on own work situation" factor was associated with persistent neck pain 4 years later. The study indicates that having little influence on one's own work situation is a predictor of neck pain. (75756)
CIS 00-1619 The role of health risk factors and disease on worker productivity. Burton W.N., Conti D.J., Chen C.Y., Schultz A.B., Edington D.W., Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Oct. 1999, Vol.41, No.10, p.863-877. Illus. 46 ref. (In English) Internet: This study measures the actual decrease in the productivity of employees that is associated with health problems while they are on the job, in addition to measures of absenteeism and disability. These three measurements were combined to produce a Worker Productivity Index (WPI). The WPIs of 564 telephone customer-service agents were correlated with the employees' number and type of health risks. Additionally, the WPI was also examined across different disease states in the same population of employees. As the number of health risks increased, an employee's productivity decreased. The nature of the health risk may also differentially affect the pattern of the decrease. Finally, disease states were also associated with different patterns of productivity reduction. (75753)
CIS 00-1620 Disc degeneration of the lumbar spine: MRI-based assessment, risk factors and relation to low back pain. Luoma K., Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, Topeliuksenkatu 41 aA, 00250 Helsinki, Finland, 2000. 90+[54]p. Illus. Bibl.ref., ISBN 951-802-389-1 (In English) Internet: Literature survey and analysis of the problems of disc degeneration of the spine, particularly in relation to three groups of workers: machine operators, construction carpenters and municipal office workers. The physical signs of spine degeneration usually associated with back pain, such as posterior and anterior bulges and decreases in signal intensity of the nucleus pulposus were examined in relation to occupation and some other factors. There was an increased risk of posterior bulge among carpenters, and of anterior bulge with machine operation and car driving. All signs of disc degeneration were related to a history of back accidents but not to body height, overweight, smoking or frequency of physical exercise. Overall, the conclusion is that other factors than disc degeneration are also important in the aetiology of low back pain. (75824)
CIS 00-1621 A study of occupational dermatitis in further education training hairdressing establishments in Scotland. Keddie C., Health and Safety Executive, HSE Books, P.O. Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 2WA, United Kingdom, 1998. iv, 12p. Illus. 9 ref. (In English) Internet: Hairdressers are known to be subject to a high risk of dermatitis. A total of 200 apprentice hairdressers attending 20 vocational education institutions were given structured questionnaires with the aim of assessing their level of awareness of occupational safety and health issues within their profession. Course senior lecturers or department health and safety representatives were also questioned. 20% of the students had pre-existing skin problems. A similar level had pre-existing respiratory problems, a history of allergy and were taking medication related to these conditions. A further 10% developed significant skin symptoms and 3% respiratory symptoms since commencing their training. The report makes several recommendations, in particular with respect to pre-entry health screening and training. (75816)

CIS 00-1628 An exploratory study of meanings of risk control for long term and acute effect occupational health and safety risks in small business construction firms. Holmes N., Lingard H., Yesilyurt Z., De Munk F., Journal of Safety Research, Winter 1999, Vol.30, No.4, p.251-261. Illus. 36 ref. (In English) Internet: A qualitative study of employers' and employees' understanding of occupational health and safety (OHS) risk control was conducted among a sample of small enterprises of the Australian construction industry with the examples of two risks relevant to this industry: falls from heights, which represented an immediate consequence, and occupational skin disease, which represented a long-term health effect. Participants perceived the immediate effect, the falls from heights risk, as being more important in their workplaces than the delayed effect, the skin disease risk. The risk of falls from heights was perceived to be controllable but requiring a great deal of effort to prevent, whereas there was a fatalistic resignation to the risk of occupational skin disease. As part of a study to assess member companies' OHS activities, an on-site audit was performed for 11 sites. The audit assessed five key components of a management system for a number of OHS activities. It was found that management-system components more likely to be in place included goals and procedure definition, whereas measures of performance, review of measures, and corrective action were less well documented. Environmental surveillance and injury reduction were most actively monitored, as indicated by the number of measures of performance relating to these activities. (75752)

The use of casual labour - e.g. fixed-term contracts, temporary work - is part of this approach. It enables companies to adjust rapidly to sudden and seasonal variations in business without incurring long-term labour costs. The purpose of this study is to compare four companies making use of temporary labour in order to identify factors contributing to or adversely affecting the occupational safety of temporary employees. It analyses the companies' policies regarding safety and temporary labour. It examines the methods the companies use and the indicators they draw up to assess the efficiency of their occupational risk prevention practices. (75891)

Gold D., Tampere University of Technology, P.O. Box 527, 33101 Tampere, Finland, 2001. 168p. + annexes. Illus. 40 ref. (In English) Internet: PhD thesis. A group of 400 indigenous fishermen divers from Thailand's west coast (the Urak Lawoi) was studied between 1995 and 1999. They use primitive diving equipment (relying on surface-supplied compressed air) and practice traditional diving. They have very high morbidity and mortality rates, mostly due to decompression illness. This condition is ascribed to unsafe diving patterns, short surface intervals and the lack of safety awareness or decompression stops after long and deep dives. In the study, 1/3 of the active divers reported decompression illness at some point in their lives, with over one half suffering from recurring non-disabling forms of the disease. Spinal injury and joint damage was detected in 24% and 30% of the divers examined, respectively. Serious cases of decompression illness are treated by in-water recompression, which in many cases resolves the problem, but in some divers does not. Other hazards are exposure to CO in the breathing air from the gasoline- or diesel-driven compressor and sudden interruption of air supply, which forces divers to immediate surfacing, which may result in very severe decompression illness and even death. As a result of the study, the diving practices of the divers were considerably improved and safety awareness increased among the divers and in their community. (75855)

CIS 00-1649 Development of an exposure matrix for respirable crystalline silica in the British pottery industry. Burgess G.L., Annals of Occupational Hygiene, Apr. 1998, Vol.42, No.3, p.209-217. Illus. 22 ref. (In English) Internet: Processes associated with occupational exposure to respirable crystalline silica in the British pottery industry were investigated to develop estimates of worker exposures from 1930 to 1995. Information was derived from more than 1300 air samples, published literature and unpublished reports of dust control innovations and process changes. A matrix was developed specifically to support a mortality study of 5115 pottery workers in North Staffordshire, UK. Matrix values range from 2µg/m3 for pottery support activities performed in the 1990s to 800µg/m3 for firing activities in the 1930s. Although exposure estimates within particular decades varied, median concentrations for all process categories displayed an overall trend towards progressive reduction in exposure during the 65 year span. Potential methods to validate the matrix as well as sources of error are discussed. (75716)

CIS 00-1651 Quartz exposures and severe silicosis: A role for the hilar nodes. Seaton A., Cherrie J.W., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.383-386. Illus. 14 ref. (In English) Internet: Two stonemasons working together in an environment with high concentrations of quartz pursued very different clinical courses: one died of rapidly progressive silicosis and the other developed hilar adenopathy and, later, early massive fibrosis. The man who died had a 30-year exposure estimated to have averaged <0.1mg/m3, leading to hilar node fibrosis and calcification, followed by a five year exposure to about 2mg/m3 which proved fatal. Estimates of exposure tallied with postmortem measurement of lung burden, suggesting retention of all dust deposited in the lungs over his final period of work. The younger man, working from the start of his apprenticeship alongside the older one, had a six year exposure to about 1.5mg/m3, which caused hilar node enlargement and subsequent calcification but minimal lung involvement. Exposures to relatively low concentrations of quartz may be capable of causing hilar node fibrosis, impairing the clearance of any quartz inhaled subsequently. (75734)

Illus. 17 ref. (In French) Internet: The use of direct reading instruments for counting airborne fibres is increasingly widespread. Two such instruments (the FM-7400 and Fibrecheck FC-2) were compared with the conventional method of filter sampling and phase contrast optical microscopy counting. It emerged that direct reading instruments are rapid and easy to use. However, if used as is, they can produce totally flawed results when measuring certain granulometric classes of fibrous aerosols. It is therefore important to check their suitability for fibre detection when seeking to measure fibre concentrations in the air. If they are to give results which go beyond mere assessment, they must be calibrated with reference to the conventional method. (75895)

CIS 00-1657 The impact of smoke-free workplaces on declining cigarette consumption in Australia and the United States. Chapman S., Borland R., Scollo M., Brownson R.C., Dominello A., Woodward S., American Journal of Public Health, July 1999, Vol.89, No.7, p.1018-1023. 50 ref. (In English) Internet: Nineteen studies of the impact of smoke-free workplaces on workday cigarette consumption in Australia and the United States are reviewed. The number and cost of cigarettes forgone are calculated and extrapolated to a scenario in which all indoor work areas were smoke-free. Of the 19 studies, 18 reported declines in daily smoking rates, and 17 reported declines in smoking prevalence. Smoke-free workplaces are currently responsible for an annual reduction of some 602 million cigarettes, or 1.8% of all cigarettes that might otherwise be consumed in Australia, and an annual reduction of 9.7 billion cigarettes (2%) in the United States. Approximately 22.3% of the 2.7 billion decrease in cigarette consumption in Australia between 1988 and 1995 can be attributed to smoke-free workplaces, as can 12.7% of the 76.5 billion decrease in the United States between 1988 and 1994. If workplaces were universally smoke-free, the number of cigarettes forgone annually would increase to 1.14 billion (3.4%) in Australia and 20.9 billion (4.1%) in the United States. (75707)

CIS 00-1659 A new hazardous waste index. Gupta J.P., Suresh Babu B., Journal of Hazardous Materials, May 1999, Vol.67, No.1, p.1-7. 7 ref. (In English) Internet: Hazardous wastes, once generated, must be stored, transported, treated, disposed of and recycled, depending on the situation. With laws being tightened, attention to safety considerations must be increased. Before any operation is carried out, it is vital to know the hazardous characteristics of the waste to be handled. Because waste, generally, is a mixture instead of a pure compound, its hazardous characteristics are difficult to determine and generalize because of the different hazards of each component. A new Hazardous Waste Index (HWI) is proposed in this paper. The index measures hazards related to flammability, reactivity, toxicity and corrosivity as well as the pH value for a hazardous waste. Two examples are given for its use. The index can be modified to include radioactive or mixed waste. (75718)
CIS 00-1660 Preventive measures reduce exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons at a graphite electrode plant. Dell'Omo M., Muzi G., Marchionna G., Latini L., Carrieri P., Paolemili P., Abbritti G., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.401-406. Illus. 26 ref. (In English) Internet: End-of-shift urinary 1-hydroxypyrene (1-hpur), a biological marker of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), was measured by high performance liquid chromatography in electrode workers in a graphite electrode plant. After implementation of preventive measures, median concentrations 1-hpur were significantly reduced in some groups of workers. In workers at a second baking impregnation unit, in end product finishing and in the power station, 1-hpur concentrations were unchanged. Urinary 1-hp concentrations were still significantly higher in each group of workers than in the control group. Concentrations in the workers varied with the type of job, the highest values being found in workers engaged in the power station, in the two baking impregnation units and in the green electrode unit. Implementing preventive measures significantly reduced exposure to PAHs at a graphite electrode plant. The reduction in median and peak concentrations of 1-hpur, which reflects total exposure to, and internal dose of PAHs, was most evident in workers employed in the units where preventive measures had been taken. CIS 00-1661 Occupational exposure to alkoxysilanes in a fibreglass manufacturing plant. Mäittälä J., Pennanen S., Puputti M., Haapa K., Liesivuori J., International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, Nov. 1999, Vol.72, No.8, p.539-545. 30 ref. (In English) Internet: To assess the exposure of workers to alkoxysilanes and to determine the main route of exposure during the manufacture of fibreglass, samples were taken from workers and their environment. The silane concentrations in the air samples were below the detection limit of the analytical methods used. The mean dermal exposure to 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane was analysed from cellulose patch samples as well as in handwash samples. The results showed that the workers were clearly exposed to silanes. The main route of potential exposure was through the skin, especially the hands, which emphasized the importance of wearing appropriate protective gloves. According to patch sampling, on average two thirds of the cases of total dermal exposure were caused by exposure of the forearm, as indicated by the amounts of silanes analysed in the forearm patches. Since almost every worker wore protective gloves, the main cause of exposure to silanes was from the wearing short-sleeved T-shirts which did not provide any protection to the arms. (75747)

A simplified method, based on responses proposed by industrial hygiene experts, has been developed for ranking "potential chemical risks" on the basis of information derived from safety data sheets and labels. This method is a valuable aid to chemical risk assessment and priority setting in factories when establishing risk prevention policies. (75892)
CIS 00-1664 Use of hydrofluoric acid in chemical laboratories - Occupational risk prevention. CIS 00-1666 Airborne allergic contact urticaria from methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride and hexahydrophthalic anhydride. Kanerva L., Alanko K., Jolanki R., Estlander T., Contact Dermatitis, Dec. 1999, Vol.41, No.6, p.339-341. Illus. 15 ref. (In English) Internet: A 32-year-old atopic man began to work as a winder in an electrical machine manufacturing plant. Within a few months he developed rhinitis and conjunctivitis, but he waited 7 years before seeing a doctor about it. He also developed work-related pruritus and redness on his arms and face. He worked in an area where methylhexahydrophthalic anhydride (MHHPA) and hexahydrophthalic anhydride (HHPA) were used to harden epoxy resins. Patch testing was negative. An open application test showed a strong urticarial follicular reaction with MHHPA and a provocation test with this substance was positive. Provocation testing with HHPA was negative when diluted. Applied undiluted, HHPA provoked whealing. It was concluded that the patient had occupational allergic contact urticaria from MHHPA and HHPA. Occupational rhinitis from HHPA was also diagnosed from prick tests and RASTs. A change of job was recommended. (75723)
CIS 00-1667 Occupational sensitisation to p-phenylenediamine: A 17-year review. Armstrong D.K.B., Jones A.B., Smith H.R., Ross J.S., White I.R., Rycroft R.J.G, McFadden J.P., Contact Dermatitis, Dec. 1999, Vol.41, No.6, p.348-349. 12 ref. (In English) Internet: The substance p-phenylenediamine (PPD) is a potent contact allergen commonly found in hairdye. Between 1982 and 1998, 26,706 patients with suspected contact dermatitis were patch tested. 667 (2.5%) were positive. The commonest sites of dermatitis were the hands (35%) and the face and neck (27%). Of occupational groups, hairdressers had the highest rate of PPD allergy (19%), the great majority with hand dermatitis, followed by rubber workers (6%). (75725)
CIS 00-1668 Biomonitoring of manganese in blood, urine and axillary hair following low-dose exposure during the manufacture of dry cell batteries. Bader M., Dietz M.C., Ihrig A., Triebig G., International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, Nov. 1999, Vol.72, No.8, p.521-527. Illus. 23 ref. (In English) Internet: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 100 workers from three different workplace areas in a dry cell battery manufacturing plant and on 17 currently nonexposed referents, to examine the relationship between the external exposure to manganese dioxide (MnO2) and the body burden of manganese in blood, urine and hair. Manganese in blood and axillary hair correlated with airborne manganese in group-based calculations but not on an individual level. The manganese concentrations varied between 3.2µg/L and 25.8µg/L in the blood and between 0.4µg/L and 49.6µg/L in hair. Mean values were lower for the nonexposed referents. Manganese differed significantly between the highly exposed workers and both the reference and the low-exposure group. No differences for manganese in urine were observed between workers and referents. Manganese in blood is a specific and suitable parameter for the biomonitoring of MnO2 exposure, although its validity is limited to group-based calculations. (75745)
CIS 00-1669 A cross-sectional study of workers in the chemical industry with occupational exposure to hexamethylenetetramine. Merget R., Topcu M., Friese K., Vormberg R., Fuchs T., Raulf-Heimsoth M., Breitstadt R., International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, Nov. 1999, Vol.72, No.8, p.533-538. Illus. 11 ref. (In English) Internet: To assess the health effects of hexamethylenetetramine (HMT) on the airways and skin of workers in the chemical industry, a cross-sectional study was performed with 17 employees of a HMT-producing chemical plant and 16 control subjects from the plant, as well as 4 subjects who had left the production for medical reasons. A high proportion of exposed subjects and controls reported symptoms during the previous year, most of them were not related to work. Work-related symptoms and objective parameters did not show differences between groups. No cases of sensitization to HMT as assessed by skin prick tests or patch tests were found. Among those who had left the HMT production for medical reasons, 2 former workers showed sensitization to HMT by patch tests. These reported eczema during exposure but lost symptoms after removal from exposure. High exposures to HMT may cause allergic contact dermatitis. There was no evidence of an increased risk for occupational asthma. (75746)
CIS 00-1670 Chemical exposures of rocket-engine test-stand personnel and cancer mortality in a cohort of aerospace workers. Ritz B., Morgenstern H., Froines J., Moncau J., Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Oct. 1999, Vol.41, No.10, p.903-910. 15 ref. (In English) Internet: A retrospective cohort study of 6,107 aerospace workers was conducted to examine whether exposure to chemicals - primarily hydrazine fuels - during rocket-engine fuelling and testing affects cancer mortality. After adjustment for confounding variables, the estimated rate ratio for lung cancer mortality, comparing exposed to unexposed workers from the same facility, ranged from 1.68 to 2.10, depending on job-duration threshold (6 or 24 months) and lag (0 to 15 years). Similar results were obtained for haematopoietic and lymphopoietic cancer and for bladder and kidney cancer mortality, but estimates for these cancers were imprecise. It is concluded that occupational exposure to hydrazine or other chemicals associated with rocket-engine testing jobs increased the risk of dying from lung cancer, and possibly other cancers, in this population of aerospace workers. CIS 00-1671 The effects of exposure to aluminium on neurobehavioural function and dopaminergic metabolism. Yang H.G., Lee B.L., Liang Y.X., Zheng Y.X., Ong C.N., International Journal of Environmental Health Research, 1998, No.8, p.101-110. 25 ref. (In English) Internet: A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of exposure to aluminium (Al) on the neurobehavioural function and the dopaminergic metabolism among 33 exposed workers compared to 40 controls. Neurobehavioural functions and two end products of catecholamine metabolism, homovanillic acid and vanillymandellic acid, were measured. The mean concentration of Al in urine was significantly higher in the exposed workers than the controls, but no statistical difference was observed for serum Al, suggesting that urinary Al is a better biomarker for Al exposure. The neurobehavioural tests showed significant differences; manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination and memory, were poorer in the Al-exposed workers. The data also showed that both of the catecholamine metabolites were higher in the exposed group. (75759)

Illus. 21 ref. (In French) Internet: Thirty volunteers in six companies took part in a survey to measure the performance of negative-pressure gas respirators with no powered ventilation. Two full-face masks and five half-masks were tested. Each mask was fitted with a filter adapted to the solvent to which operatives were exposed. A new filter was used for each test. The efficiency of the masks was gauged by taking simultaneous readings of pollutant gas levels inside the masks (actual exposure) and outside the masks (potential exposure). The pollutant gases were generated by solvent mixtures. The study produced the following findings: only one mask was shown to be inefficient; there was little or no difference in the performances of the other six; mask leakage in actual working conditions is about 10%; leakage is higher than levels usually found in the literature (between 2% and 4%). The variability of results excludes prediction of the effectiveness of negative-pressure gas respirators in industrial settings. (75894)

CIS 00-1677 Exposure and risk estimation for pesticides in high-volume spraying. de Vreede J.A.F., Brouwer D.H., Stevenson H., van Hemmen J.J., Annals of Occupational Hygiene, Apr. 1998, Vol.42, No.3, p.151-157. Illus. 16 ref. (In English) Internet: During twenty applications with a spray pistol of methomyl to chrysanthemums, inhalation exposure as well as potential and actual dermal exposure were monitored using the "whole-body" method. On the basis of exposure data, the health risk from methomyl and thirteen other pesticides frequently used in flower horticulture was evaluated. From the No-Observed-Adverse-Effect-Level (NOAEL) in animal experiments an Indicative Limit Value (ILV) was derived. The ILV is considered indicative of the limit of daily exposure which probably has no adverse health effects. This value is only a rough approximation, as it is based on limited data. The database for a proper assessment of such a value is generally incomplete. To reduce dermal exposure levels below the ILV, exposure of the hands in particular has to be reduced, for example by using impermeable gloves. (75711)

CIS 00-1679 Exposures in the alumina and primary aluminium industry: An historical review. Benke G., Abramson M., Sim M., Annals of Occupational Hygiene, Apr. 1998, Vol.42, No.3, p.173-189. Illus. 95 ref. (In English) Internet: Epidemiological studies on chemical exposure in the aluminium industry are reviewed. Most such studies have concentrated on aluminium smelting, with many limitations in methodology. In aluminium smelting, exposure to fluorides, coal tar pitch volatiles and sulfur dioxide have tended to decrease in recent years, but insufficient information exists for other exposures. One finding is that excess cancers have been found among aluminium smelting workers. The small number of cohort studies have been a factor in the failure to identify clear exposure-response relationships for respiratory diseases. A dose-response relationship has been recently described for fluoride exposure and bronchial hyper-responsiveness, but whether fluorides are the causative agent remains to be determined. Practically no epidemiological studies and quantitative exposure data for bauxite mining and alumina refining exist. Determination of possible relationships for this part of the industry through improved exposure assessment methods should be the focus of future studies. (75714)
CIS 00-1680 Manganese exposure in foundry furnacemen and scrap recycling workers. Lander F., Kristiansen J., Lauritsen J.M., International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, Nov. 1999, Vol.72, No.8, p.546-550. Illus. 20 ref. (In English) Internet: The aim of the study was to investigate the sources and levels of manganese exposure in foundry furnacemen by a combined measuring of blood-manganese (B-Mn) and manganese in ambient air (air-Mn). Air-Mn and B-Mn were measured during and after exposure in 24 furnacemen employed in foundries and in 21 workers from a scrap recycling plant. Furnacemen who work in insufficiently ventilated smelting departments inhale, absorb and retain significant amounts of manganese in their blood despite a generally low measured airborne level of manganese fumes. The exposure values compared with post-exposure values revealed a significant decrease in the B-Mn level of the most exposed furnacemen. Two persons were suspected of suffering clinically subacute manganese intoxication as both had B-Mn levels beyond the normal limit. The results indicate that B-Mn may be a valuable parameter for estimating recent exposure (within 1-2 weeks). (75748)

(In English) Internet: Surveys at sites of remedial in-situ timber and masonry treatment took place with the purpose of measuring the surface deposition and inhalation exposure of the operators to the pesticide spray fluids used. The diluted spray fluids were found to have significantly different concentrations from those intended by the sprayer. Deposition rates for spray fluid on coveralls covered a wide range, with more than a 30-fold difference between the median and the highest results. Contamination of coveralls occurred in all surveys, with the pesticide getting beneath the coveralls in 95% of surveys, with a median 5% contamination beneath the overall. The averaged and normalized deposition pattern was 75% on the legs, 11% on the arms, 12% on the torso and 2% on the head. Exposure of hands to pesticide (expressed as spray fluid) beneath protective gloves occurred in 89% of the surveys and contamination of socks by spray fluid in 78% of the surveys. Exposure by inhalation to spray fluid was measurable in 72% of the surveys. Inhalation exposure and deposition on coveralls rose markedly at spray pressures above 700kPa (100psi). (75712)

(In Italian) Internet: The purpose of this study was to find out if the determination of benzene concentrations in exhaled air from petrol (gasoline) station attendants is a useful way to monitor exposure to low environmental levels of benzene. In an Italy-wide survey, it was found that a strong correlation indeed exists between exposure levels and exhaled air concentration, particularly when there is a delay between exposure and sampling (correlation r=0.67 with a 2hr delay and r=0.79 with a 14-16hr delay). Determination methods and relevant legal texts are given in the appendix. (75799)

CIS 00-1704 Accident analysis at a solvent recovery plant. Cozzani V., Nardini G., Petarca L., Zanelli S., Journal of Hazardous Materials, June 1999, Vol.67, No.2, p.145-161. Illus. 11 ref. (In English) Internet: An experimental investigation of an accident in a solvent recovery plant was carried out using calorimetric and thermogravimetric techniques. The immediate cause of the accident was an unforeseen exothermic decomposition reaction. The main underlying cause of the accident was the absence of safety culture in the plant management. A simplified screening procedure based on differential scanning calorimetry was used in order to test the thermal stability of the nonvolatile fraction of the solvent-contaminated wastes present on the plant in order to be processed. More than 75% of the samples examined showed exothermal decomposition phenomena starting at temperatures higher than 100°C. Our analysis of the accident suggested that the safe operation of waste solvent recovery processes requires an accurate characterization of the thermal stability of the process feed. Process safety is also increased by an adequate emergency vent and an accurate control of operating temperature, that may be reduced operating under vacuum. Safety devices may also include a water supply for emergency quench. (75719)

CIS 00-1725 Factors influencing personal magnetic field exposure: Preliminary results for power utility and office workers. Semple S., Cherrie J.W., Annals of Occupational Hygiene, Apr. 1998, Vol.42, No.3, p.167-171. Illus. 16 ref. (In English) Internet: Epidemiological studies and laboratory research suggest that exposure to extremely low frequency (<300Hz) magnetic fields is associated with an increase in the risk of developing a number of rare diseases, including leukaemia. The purpose of this pilot study was to identify and evaluate personal, work and environmental factors and their influence on exposure levels. Office workers and power utility workers were studied using personal dosimeters to measure magnetic field exposure, along with frequent observation or measurement of factors related to exposure. Factors such as average and closest distance to source, time at position and current flow were combined in a series of metrics to investigate simple models of personal exposure. The results indicate that mean and peak magnetic field exposure levels are linked to current flow and the average distance of a worker from the source of the magnetic field. These factors are more accurate predictors of high exposures than they are of lower and average levels. (75713)
CIS 00-1726 Occupational ingestion of P-32: The value of monitoring techniques to determine dose - A case report. McCunney R.J., Masse F., Galanek M., Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Oct. 1999, Vol.41, No.10, p.878-883. Illus. 7 ref. (In English) Internet: The internal dose of a P-32-labelled compound that had inadvertently been ingested was estimated using the International Commission on Radiation Protection (ICPR)-30 model. This metabolic model assumes that 80% of the material ingested is absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract because P-32 is soluble. Twenty-four-hour urine sampling over a 6-week period, coupled with daily whole body counting over the same period, was performed. An assessment of the laboratory where the accident occurred indicated that approximately 600µCi of radioactive phosphorus was missing. The total effective dose equivalent was estimated at 4.8rem (48mSv). This report confirms the value of using the ICRP-30 model with urinary measurements and whole body counting to estimate the radioactive dose received as a result of ingestion of P-32. (75754)
CIS 00-1727 Medial plantar nerve conduction velocities among patients with vibration syndrome due to chain-saw work. Hirata M., Sakakibara H., Hashiguchi T., Toibana N., Koshiyama H., Hirano H., International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, Nov. 1999, Vol.72, No.8, p.551-554. 26 ref. (In English) Internet: This study examined the effect of the vibration syndrome (VS) on the peripheral nervous system in the lower extremities. 38 patients with VS due to previous exposure to vibration from chain-saw work and 55 age-matched controls were examined for sensory nerve conduction velocities in the medial plantar nerve (SCV-P). The patient group was divided into two subgroups, one with and the other without vibration-induced white finger (VWF). Analysis of variance of SCV-P for the three groups showed significant difference between the controls and the group with VWF but not between the controls and the group without VWF. These findings suggest that VS affects the peripheral nervous system function in the lower extremities via mediation of circulatory disturbance manifested as VWF. (75749)

(In English) Internet: Mini-bus traffic accidents were studied in order to gain insight into the factors affecting their occurrence and severity. Models related to the time until accident occurrence and the number of accident injuries were specified and estimated using data collected from mini-bus drivers in Jordan. The models yielded significant associations between the independent variables and both the time until accident occurrence and their corresponding number of injuries. Higher accident rates were associated with drivers who were unmarried, took too few rest breaks and had short time intervals since previous accidents. Lower accident rates were associated with drivers who had long bus-driving and private vehicle-driving experience. Greater accident severity was associated with single-vehicle accidents, rural intercity routes and speeding. Accident severity decreased and the time between two accidents increased when the previous accident was severe. The results seem to indicate that post- and immediate accident history affect the severity of upcoming accidents. Recommendations based on these findings are made in an attempt to improve mini-bus safety. (75720)

Among the positive correlations for accident incidence are: total mileage driven; average speed; early pregnancy; high vehicle occupancy; high levels of alcohol and medicine consumption; certain safety measures and laws (which may instill a false sense of security). Among negative correlations are: increased traffic congestion; imposition of speed limits; mandatory seat belts (impact on injuries and fatalities); higher fuel prices; possibly also: moderate alcohol consumption. Data and their analysis were included from the following countries: Canada (Quebec), Germany, Norway, France, Sweden, United States (California). (75811)

Christensen L.P., Contact Dermatitis, Dec. 1999, Vol.41, No.6, p.320-324. Illus. 28 ref. (In English) Internet: Alstroemeria is one of the top 10 cut flower species on the Dutch market. This study investigates the possibility that tulipalin A released from Alstroemeria could be a source of airborne contact dermatitis. The allergen tulipalin A was collected, quantified and identified from cut flowers of two Alstroemeria hybrids. The amounts of tulipalin A released into the air were correlated with tulipalin A and total allergen content (tulipalin A and tuliposides) in the plant tissue, respectively. Tulipalin A was released primarily from the wounded areas, i.e. the stems, although small amounts were also emitted from the undamaged flowers in one of the hybrids. The content of tulipalin A exceeded that of tuliposides in leaves and flowers of both hybrids, whereas the content of tulipalin A in stems (in % fresh weight) was slightly lower than the content of tuliposides. CIS 00-1768 A four-year follow-up study on subjective symptoms and functional capacities in workers using hand-held grinders. Mirbod S.M., Akbar-Khanzadeh F., Onozuka M., Jamali M., Watanabe K., Inaba R., Iwata H., Industrial Health, Oct. 1999, Vol.37, No.4, p.415-425. Illus. 36 ref. (In English) Internet: Fifty-three grinders working in the metal industry were re-examined four years after their first examination. Information about age, occupation, daily vibration exposure, drinking and smoking habits, and presence of subjective symptoms such as vibration-induced white finger, and numbness and pain in the fingers was collected during the first and second examination. On average, the reduction of hand-grip force during the 4-year follow-up course was 7.4%. Significant differences in the paired data of pinching power and tapping ability could be detected. It was concluded that: prolonged occupational exposure to the vibration of hand-held grinding tools should be considered as a risk factor causing disturbances in the hand-arm system of the operators; the results of recovery rate of finger skin temperature and the vibration sensation threshold seem to be appropriate indicators for the assessment of peripheral vascular and peripheral nerve disturbances in workers exposed to hand-arm vibration; and to reduce the subjects' physical stress, attention should be paid to ergonomic factors. CIS 00-1769 Ergonomic stressors and upper extremity disorders in vehicle manufacturing: Cross sectional exposure-response trends. Punnett L., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.414-420. Illus. 45 ref. (In English) Internet: To evaluate the association between upper extremity soft tissue disorders and exposure to preventable ergonomic stressors in vehicle manufacturing operations, a cross-sectional study was conducted in a vehicle stamping and an engine assembly plant. A standardized physical examination of the upper extremities was performed on all subjects. An interviewer-administered questionnaire obtained data on demographics, work history, musculoskeletal symptoms, non-occupational covariates, and psycho-physical ratings of ergonomic stressors. The prevalence of symptom disorders was 22% for the wrists or hands and 15% for the shoulders or upper arms; cases defined on the basis of a physical examination were about 80% as frequent. Disorders of the upper extremities, shoulders, and wrists or hands all increased markedly with exposure score, after adjustment for plant, acute injury, sex, body mass index, systemic disease and seniority. The exposure-response trend was very similar for symptom cases and for physical examination cases. (75739)

CIS 00-1773 The effect of a tilting seat on back, lower back and legs during sitting work. Udo H., Fujimura M., Yoshinaga F., Industrial Health, Oct. 1999, Vol.37, No.4, p.369-381. Illus. 41 ref. (In English) Internet: The purpose of the study was to examine the possible effects of a tilting seat on the back, lower back and legs. Ten healthy male subjects performed word-processing operations while sitting on a chair for one hour under two different seating conditions: rocking and fixed. At the end of the experiment, the subjects were asked to evaluate the two conditions with respect to localized fatigue and operational efficiency. There was no significant difference in lower leg swelling between the two conditions. The pain scores for the neck, shoulders, back and lower back were higher under the fixed condition, while those for the buttocks were higher under the rocking condition. There was a significant difference in the subjective evaluations of the two chairs. These findings suggest that the rocking condition, in contrast to the fixed seating condition, reduced back and lower back pain as a result of its tilting capability. (75726)
CIS 00-1774 Lumbar vertebral angles and back muscle loading with belts. Lee Y.H., Chen C.Y., Industrial Health, Oct. 1999, Vol.37, No.4, p.390-397. Illus. 25 ref. (In English) Internet: The study examined effects of lumbar and pelvic belts on the change of lumbosacral angle (LSA) and back muscle activity in postures of standing, erect sitting and slump sitting. Eighteen healthy male subjects participated in this study. Though no significant belt effect was identified on the back muscle EMG, the radiographic data revealed an interactive effect of postures and belts on the change of LSA. In standing, the belts increased LSA. In erect sitting, the lumbar belt had no effect but the pelvic belt decreased LSA. While sitting slump with a trunk flexion of 15°, both belts increased LSA by restricting the movement of the pelvis. Belt effect on LSA was accompanied with a change of pelvic angle. (75727)
CIS 00-1775 Association of working hours with biological indices related to the cardiovascular system among engineers in a machinery manufacturing company. Sasaki T., Iwasaki K., Oka T., Hisanaga N., Industrial Health, Oct. 1999, Vol.37, No.4, p.457-463. 17 ref. (In English) Internet: A field survey of 278 engineers (20-59 years) in a machinery manufacturing company was conducted to investigate the association of working hours with biological indices related to the cardiovascular system (heart rate variability, blood pressure and serum levels of magnesium, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S) and cholesterol). Average working hours (defined as hours at workplace plus half of the commuting time) and sleeping hours in this study were 60.2 ± 6.3hr/week and 6.6 ± 0.8hr/day respectively. There was no significant relationship between working hours and biological indices related to the cardiovascular system, but sleeping hours had a strong negative correlation with working hours. Furthermore, the serum DHEA-S level was significantly related to sleeping hours positively. These two results indicate that long working hours might lower the serum DHEA-S level due to the reduction of sleeping hours. (75730)

Sluiter J.K., van der Beek A.J., Frings-Dresen M.H.W., Occupational and Environmental Medicine, June 1998, Vol.55, No.6, p.407-413. Illus. 21 ref. (In English) Internet: The urinary excretion rate of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol of 10 coach drivers was studied during a long distance trip of three days and two consecutive days off. The second day off was considered as the baseline. An occupationally induced disturbance of the circadian rhythmicity was found for adrenaline and noradrenaline but not for cortisol. The drivers showed occupationally induced reactivity in rates of urinary excretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol. After the outward journey the rates of excretion of catecholamines did not return to baseline values. The course of recovery in adrenaline excretion after the journey showed a new phenomenon, which has been called "fatigue debt". It is recommended that longer resting times in shuttle bus trips and fixed days off after these kind of trips should be planned. (75738)

CIS 00-1793 Critical success factors for behavior-based safety: A study of twenty industry-wide applications. DePasquale J.P., Geller E.S., Journal of Safety Research, Winter 1999, Vol.30, No.4, p.237-249. lllus. 41 ref. (In English) Internet: A perception survey of behaviour-based safety (BBS) administered to individual employees of 20 organizations measured a variety of variables previously identified to influence success of the process. The survey data showed five variables to be significantly predictive of employee involvement in a BBS process: perceptions that BBS training was effective; trust in management abilities; accountability for BBS through performance appraisals; whether or not one had received education in BBS; and tenure with the organization. Also, employees in organizations mandating employee participation in a BBS process reported significantly higher levels of involvement, trust in management, trust in coworkers, and satisfaction with BBS training than did employees whose process was completely voluntary. CIS 00-1794 Are salivary immunoglobulin A and lysozyme biomarkers of stress among nurses?. Ng V., Koh D., Chan G., Ong H.Y., Chia S.E., Ong C.N., Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Oct. 1999, Vol.41, No.10, p.920-927. Illus. 27 ref. (In English) Internet: Salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA) and lysozyme have been studied as possible biomarkers of stress. The study examined the stress levels among female nurses in various units of a hospital and the relationship between these stress levels and salivary IgA and lysozyme secretion. Stress levels were assessed with a ten-point Stress Assessment Score (SAS) and a direct question on perceived life stress. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and lyso-plate methods were used to determine salivary IgA and lysozyme levels. Nurses working in various units under different conditions experienced dissimilar levels of stress. Salivaly IgA, but not lysozyme, correlated inversely with self-reported levels of stress. It may thus be a potential biomarker in future studies on stress. (75758)
