    This publication is an outcome of a European Union funded project, which is being implemented by the International Labour Organization (ILO), entitled “Assessing and Addressing the Effects of Trade on Employment (ETE)”. This project aims to provide its constituents with capacity building, sound research evidence, and a platform for discussion and formulation of national policies related to trade and employment. We believe that the findings of this report will be of great interest to all, particularly policy makers and the social partners in Bangladesh, who are concerned about the challenges that developing countries face in a globalized world.

  6. Impact of trade in services on employment in Bangladesh: A case of the IT sector

    This report explores the impact and potential of the rise of Bangladesh’s IT exports, its linkages with employment and policies, and actions required for realizing that potential. It uses both qualitative and quantitative techniques. The qualitative techniques include an analysis of a database created from a survey of 300 IT firms in Bangladesh and responses from several interviews of stakeholders. The quantitative techniques use national accounts, labour force, and export and import data in simulation exercises. The report underlines the need for Bangladesh to consider policy measures for the enhancement of productivity and the competitiveness of IT enterprises. The report also emphasizes complementary policies such as skills training, amendment of different laws to facilitate online payment systems, education sector reforms, etc.

  7. Employment effects of FTA agreements: Perspective from Bangladesh

    This report looks at economy-wide impacts of three different FTA agreements: (a) a Bangladesh-India bilateral FTA; (b) a Bangladesh-Malaysia bilateral FTA; and (c) the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) agreement. The report explores how these bilateral and regional FTAs would affect the Bangladesh economy in terms of impact on consumer prices, exports, real wages and employment.

  1. Economic reforms and agriculture in Bangladesh: Assessment of impacts using economy-wide simulation models

    This report looks at the effects of reforms in trade and other policies that are linked to the agricultural sector in Bangladesh. It explores how these reforms might affect the Bangladesh economy in terms of output, imports, exports and - most importantly - employment. It underlines the need for Bangladesh to consider flanking measures like fiscal support and a slower pace of trade liberalization. The report also emphasizes complementary policies such as skills training for surplus agricultural labour, promoting rural-nonfarm activities and facilitating agricultural marketing operations.
