Train the Trainers workshop for Senior Master Trainers on the Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health in Ready-Made Garment Sector

Train the Trainers workshop for Senior Master Trainers aims to create better understanding of OSH among employers of Ready-Made Garment (RMG) Sector, mid and senior level management RMG factories, fire and safety instructors are attending a four day training programme on OSH.

DHAKA – A four day training programme has been organised to enhance knowledge and capacity on Occupational Safety and Health among the Employers and Management of the Ready-Made Garment Factories. Improving Working Conditions in the Ready Made Garment (RMG) Programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in collaboration with the International Training Centre (ITC) of ILO and Bangladesh Employers Federation (BEF) is conducting the training.
 
Md. Mujibul Haque Chunnu, State Minister, Ministry of Labour and Employment, formally inaugurated the ‘Train the Trainers Workshop for Senior Master Trainers on the Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health’ in the ready-made garment (RMG) sector.
 
“It is vital that the management of the RMG Factories are trained to implement Occupational Safety and Health at the ground level. It is equally important that the workers of the RMG factories are also trained on OSH. I hope this workshop will prove effective in ensuring safety for the workers of the RMG Sector,” said the state minister.
 
Over 25 participants from The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), mid and senior level management RMG factories, fire and safety instructor are attending the training.
 
Mr Srinivas B. Reddy, ILO Country Director for Bangladesh, said, “This is an opportunity for all of us to strategize our intervention manoeuvres in the factory level to ensure maximum outreach and effectiveness. It is essential that all stakeholders of the RMG sector including the workers, employers and factory-level management are on the same platform of understanding for the better implementation of OSH at factory level.”
 
The training includes a range of different topics such as introduction on Essentials of Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), OSH management, dangerous substances, fire and explosions etc. The training includes lectures, role plays and simulations facilitated by several trainers from ITC Turin, Italy.

The Government of Bangladesh (GoB) and the ILO is implementing a three-and-a-half year long initiative aimed at improving working conditions in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh. This USD $24.21 million programme is funded by Canada, Kingdom of the Netherlands and the United Kingdom.

President Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers & Exporters Association, Mr Farooq Ahmed, Secretary-General, Bangladesh Employers Federation, Dr.Arnout de Koster, Programme Manager International Training Centre, ITC ILO were present at the inaugural session of the training programme.
