Workshop on labour rights awareness in the leather sector

Over 30 participants form the leather sector participated in a day long workshop aimed at designing education programme for the workers of the sector. The workshop was jointly organized by the Promoting Fundamental Rights and Labour Relations in Export Oriented Industries (FRLR) project of International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Tannery Workers Union.

Speakers at a day long workshop on Designing Education Programmes for Workers in Leather Sector stressed on the need for creating wider awareness on Occupational Safety and Health among the workers and employers of the leather industry in Bangladesh. They also stress on ensuring better working conditions at tannery factories to reduce health risk of the workers and people leaving in the tannery areas.

“It is vital that the workers of the tannery factories and leather sector have access to information regarding the risks associated with the sector and knows the way to reduce the risk. It is very important that we ensure the workers of the leather sector are consulted when we plan a programme for them to have the maximum impact. I hope this workshop will provide us with much needed insight of the sector,” said Mr. Khondaker Mostan Hossain, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Over 30 participants form the Government, Leather Sector Trade Unions and Manufacturers attended the planning session on Education Programmes for Workers in Leather Sector. The workshop was jointly organized by the Promoting Fundamental Rights and Labour Relations in Export Oriented Industries (FRLR) project of International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Tannery Workers Union.

Speaking at the inaugural session, Honourable Ambassador of Royal Norwegian Embassy, Ms. Merete Lundemo said, “Decent work and fair globalization are related important objectives on the Norwegian Government’s agenda. Everybody must enjoy basic worker's rights, work in an environment where standards are respected, and receive their share of the wealth created.

The Promoting Fundamental Rights and Labour Relations in Export Oriented Industries (FRLR) project is funded by Royal Norwegian Government, implemented by International Labour Organization (ILO), has a multiple component labour rights programme designed to be delivered over a period of 16 months. The project will be implemented through four main components-improving the understanding of rights and labour law; capacity building tripartite constituents to engage social dialogue and sound labour relations; support government authorities to improve core function and mandates and support the implementation of occupational safety and health (OSH) improvement measures and National Action Plan (NAP) on Fire Safety, in particular its “practical activities”. These components will address the issues in the Ready Made Garment (RMG) sector and Shrimp-Processing and Shoe and Leather industries sectors. This workshop is intended to gather inputs from the union activists/workers in order to design training program creating awareness of the worker at factory level on labour rights and obligation.

“The FRLR project is a unique opportunity to address workers’ rights issues in the Leather and Shrimp sector along with RMG sector. This workshop will lay foundation for a well-structured workers education program in leather sector soon,” said Mr. Gagan Rajbhandari, Acting Country Director of ILO in Bangladesh.

Among others Dr. Wajedul Islam Khan, Adviser to Tannery Workers Union, Amirul Haque Amin, Member Secretary National Coordination Committee for Workers’ Education, Abul Kalam Azad, President Tannery Workers’Union was present the workshop. The day long workshop was held at the CIRDAP Auditorium in Dhaka.
