The Third project steering committee meeting of the ILO labour migration project in Bangladesh

The third steering committee meeting of the Project “Promoting Decent Work through Improved Migration Policy and its Application in Bangladesh” held on 08 September 2013 at the conference room (Level 5) of the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment, Probashi Kalyan Bhaban, Dhaka.

The Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment convened the third Project Steering Committee meeting of the International Labour Organization (ILO) executed “Promoting Decent Work through Improved Migration Policy and its Application in Bangladesh” project. The project is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The ministry expressed satisfaction that the ministry’s work and the technical cooperation through this project are moving hand in hand.  

Labour migration from Bangladesh has been making its way up steadily to attention of the international organizations and development agenda. This project, aside from the technical cooperation activities has contributed to the ministry’s engagement in the international dialogue as well.

With the support of the ILO, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment is moving towards setting up the first ever legal regime approved by the Parliament. Simultaneously, the Overseas Employment Policy 2013 is also being finalized. The policy and the Bill 2013 have a rights-based approach and respond the to the changed international labour migration scenario.

The ministry through this project has consistently and regularly sought public participation in policy and law making as well as research and training material development.

The project has brought to the attention of all the issues in the management of labour migration processes. Quality of the project’s work has benefitted from the involvement and interest of all stakeholders.

The project is also contributing to improve the understanding and the need for protection of the workers who are seeking overseas employment as well as those who are already working overseas. For more about the proceedings and the project, please download the report.
