Seminar on "Industry-TVET Institute Relationship" Marked the Successful Completion of “TVET Week 2014”

Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) 2014 observed from 18-24 June 2014, throughout the Bangladesh to raise awareness on skills training and expansion of the TVET.

DHAKA – Speakers at a seminar on "Industry - Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Institute Relationship" stressed the need for creating a pool of trained workers to ensure access to global labour market and to ensure steady economic growth.

“We want our TVET graduates to have their skills ‘internationally recognized’ so that they have easy access to any labour market national or international,” said Mr. Nurul Islam Nahid, MP, Honourable Minister, Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh at the seminar organised by the Directorate of Technical Education and Bangladesh Technical Education Board in collaboration with the Bangladesh Skills for Employment and Productivity Project (B-SEP).

The seminar marked the successful completion of the “TVET Week 2014.” The Directorate of Technical Education and Bangladesh Technical Education Board, Ministry of Education, the Government of Bangladesh observed “TVET Week 2014” from 18-24 June 2014, throughout the country to raise awareness on skills training and expansion of the TVET. On the last day of the “TVET Week 2014” the seminar on "Industry-TVET Institute Relationship" and “Closing Ceremony of TVET Week 2014” were held at the Institute of Diploma Engineers Bangladesh (IDEB), Kakrail, Dhaka.

The programme was organized in collaboration with the Bangladesh Skills for Employment and Productivity Project – an initiative of the Government of Bangladesh, implemented with technical support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) and financed by the Canadian Government. The B-SEP initiative is aimed at improving the skills development system in Bangladesh, to make skills relevant to industry needs and demand-driven, as well as nationally and internationally recognized and demand-driven. B-SEP is one of several initiatives taken by the ILO with different development partners to support the goal of building a better trained and qualified workforce for key industry sectors.

Mr. Arthur Shears, Senior Specialist, TVET Reform Project of International Labour Organisation (ILO) said, “the improvements that are being made to the skills development system in Bangladesh are making it possible for everyone in the country to access training, including females, workers in the informal economy, persons with disabilities and people with low levels of education. These improvements have been made possible by partnerships between industry and government training institutions, the adoption of gender-responsive, flexible training methods and incorporating generic employment competencies into new skills programmes. The National Skills Development Policy adopted in Bangladesh is the foundation for the new demand driven TVET.”

Participants from Industry and TVET institutes emphasized the need for and made suggestions on minimizing the gap between industry demand for and TVET institutes’ supply of skilled workers. Discussants at the seminar advised increased engagement of industry in the skills development process including development and assessment of new TVET programmes.

Mr. Md. Abu Yousuf, Chairman, Industry Skills Council – Furniture Sector, Mr. Jiban Kumar Chowdhury, Joint Secretary and CEO, NSDC Secretariat, Students from TVET Institutes, Mr. Md. Shawkatul Islam, Principal, Dhaka Polytechnic Institute, Mr. Md. Bazlur Rahman, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Education, Mr. A.K.M Bari, Cairman, Industry Skills Council for Tourism and Hospitality Sector, Mr. Jafrul Hasan, Chairperson, National Coordination Committee for Workers Education, Mr. Faruq Ahmed, Secretary General, Bangladesh Employers Federation participated in the discussion session.

Mr. Md. Shahjahan Mian, Director General, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) and National Project Director, B-SEP Project, Professor Md. Abul Kashem, Chairman, Bangladesh Technical Education Board and Mr. Syed Nasim Manzur, Chairman, Industry Skills Council – Leather Sector were also present at the programme.
