Bangladesh's Kamran T. Rahman Elected Vice President of the International Labour Conference

The former head of the Bangladesh Employers Federation, Mr Kamran Rahman has been elected as a Vice-President of the 2013 International Labour Conference (ILC), the annual meeting of the membership of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations specialized agency that deals with work and work-place related issues.

DHAKA (ILO News) - The former head of the Bangladesh Employers Federation, Mr Kamran Rahman has been elected as a Vice-President of the 2013 International Labour Conference (ILC), the annual meeting of the membership of the International Labour Organization (ILO), the United Nations specialized agency that deals with work and work-place related issues.

Speaking after his election Mr Rahman said, “I am honoured to have been elected as Employers’ Vice-President of the 102nd Session of the International Labour Conference, and to have this opportunity to work with the others towards achieving successful governance of this ILC in a spirit of true tripartism. This ILC is dealing with critically relevant issues, including sustainable development, decent work and green jobs, and employment and social protection in the new demographic context”.

Mr Rahman is also Vice President of the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dhaka and the Vice President for Asia-Pacific of the International Organization of Employers.

Mr Rahman is one of three elected Vice-Presidents. Ms Eulogia Familia from the Dominican Republic was also elected as an ILC Vice-President, representing Workers, and Mr Rytis Paulauskas from Lithuania will represent governments. Dr Nidal Katamine, the Minister of Labour and Minister of Transport of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, was elected as the Conference President.

The annual ILC brings together some 5,000 delegates, representing governments workers’ and employers’ organizations from the ILO’s 185 member states. The conference, often called the world parliament of labour, establishes and adopts international labour standards and is a forum for discussion of key social and work-related issues. It is held at the United Nation’s European headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland from 5-20 June 2013.
