Freedom of association and collective bargaining

Opportunities and challenges in formation and functioning of trade unions in Sri Lanka

This paper was prepared for trade unions in Sri Lanka to strategise on opportunities and challenges in freedom of association and collective bargaining, in accordance with ILO Conventions No. 87 and No. 98.

The report is organised as follows: Section 1 examines some of the key issues that have shaped the trade union environment in Sri Lanka; Section 2 is a SWOT analysis of key challenges and opportunities facing trade unions in Sri Lanka; and Section 3 concludes with strategies for trade unions to consider in overcome constraints to their formation and operation.
