January 2018

  1. COLOMBO PROCESS Thematic Area Working Group Meeting: Building synergy between Skills and Qualification Recognition and Labour Market Analysis

    23 - 24 January 2018

    Recognizing the close linkage between the two thematic areas of Skills and Qualification Recognition and Labour Market Analysis , the two chairs for these Thematic Area Working Groups (TAWG), Sri Lanka and Thailand will co-host this combined meeting, which will serve as the second face-to-face meetings of the respective TAWGs. International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) will co-organize this event with the financial assistance from the SDC.

  2. Tripartite Consultation workshop on Protocol 29

    19 January 2018

    A tripartite consultation will be held in Colombo to discuss the preliminary findings of a “Gap analysis Report on National legislation and ILO Protocol on Forced Labour” and to identify major changes required under 3P’s (protection, prosecution and prevention) to pave the way towards ratification of the Protocol on Forced Labour before the end of year 2018.

  1. Technical Meeting on Labour Migration Statistics in South Asia

    28 - 29 November 2017

    Technical experts in the fields of labour migration and statistics met to obtain a regional picture of migration-related statistics by sharing information and data collection approaches among the countries in South Asia. There was also discussion of how national, regional and global level processes and plans for collecting and analyzing data can fit together, e.g. a regional labour migration statistics database, promotion of ICLS standards and SDG monitoring. A number of areas were identified in which the ILO could support in national and regional capacity building on migration-related statistics.

  1. Inter- regional expert forum on Skills and Migration in the South Asia and Middle East Corridor.

    25 - 26 July 2017

    The two-day forum has presented new research and discussed the impact that skilling has on migrants’ wages and working conditions, and also the extent to which migrants are able to transfer their knowledge and skills after returning home from the Middle East.

    The ILO, in collaboration with the UNICEF and Girl Guides Association, is planning to host an event on World Day Against Child Labour, on 22nd of June, 2017 in Colombo

    As part of a series of events being held to mark World Day Against Child Labour (June 12th, 2017), the Girl Guide Association and the ILO hosted a speech contest in Wattala for 20 female students from four zones of Gampaha district, to raise awareness on child labour in the country.

  1. World day for Safety and Health at Work

    28 April 2017

    The International Labour Organization in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour & Trade Union Relations, National Institute for Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) together with the Employers & Workers is organizing a National Seminar on Occupational Safety & Health on 28th April 2017 to commemorate World Day for Safety and Health at Work. The workshop will be held at Hotel Renuka from 9.00 a.m. - 2.30 p.m.

  2. Migrant workers in the Construction Sector: National Consultation on Skills Assessment and Certification

    International Labour Organisation together with Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission,will be organise the above mentioned workshop on the 21st April 2017 at 9.00am to 3.00pm at Hotel Renuka in Colombo.

    The objective of the meeting is to present the goals and strategies of the "Promoting Decent Work in the Tea Plantation Sector in Sri Lanka" Project to the stakeholders. This two-year project will be implemented in two districts in the country, namely Ratnapura and Kalutara and targeting its vulnerable plantation and surrounding/adjacent rural communities.

    The Ministry of Labour & Trade Union Relations of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) will host a National Forum in Colombo on 30th August 2016. The forum will further the development discourse on the lessons learnt from the ILO implemented Local Empowerment for Economic Development(LEED) project and how it’ approach can be applied in rural development in post conflict and in non-conflict settings .
