The ILO Country office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives will be hosting a National Project Briefing on the pilot project on flood and drought resilience in Ratnapura, Kaluthara, and Kilinochchi districts under its flagship programme "Jobs for Peace and Resilience". This event will take place on Thursday, 11th October at the Movenpick Hotel in Colombo.

On the path towards becoming a middle-income country, Sri Lanka is still facing challenges partly due to shocks that potentially could push the nearly poor, vulnerable population back to chronic poverty. Climate-related disasters are one such drivers with recurring occurrences of floods, landslides, and droughts affecting the most marginalised living in high-risk conditions and with reduced capacity for recovery. Climatic shocks potentially could push the nearly poor, vulnerable population back to chronic poverty. Therefore, Sri Lanka needs measures to develop stronger resilience to mitigate harm.

This project will contribute to the national policy pertaining to disaster management which seeks to build resilience and disaster mitigation measures through developing and demonstrating effective models in rural communities. The project will adopt a dual strategy; the first component focuses on the introduction of improved land and water resource management practices that build resilience in disaster-prone districts. The second component focuses on supporting policy coherence by integrating “livelihood resilience building” within existing national rural development programmes including disaster response programmes for floods and droughts.

Delegates from government ministries, departments, NGOs, UN organisations, and other national-level stakeholders have been invited to participate in this event.
