ILO congratulates Minister on new portfolio

The Hon. Minister stated that he is leading Sri Lanka’s delegation to the 107th Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) 2018 between 28 May and 06 June, in the context of the long-standing and cordial relationship between the Government of Sri Lanka and the International Labour Organisation.

Ms. Simrin Singh briefed the Hon. Minister on the finalization of the 2018-2022 Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) for Sri Lanka, following extensive consultations with constituents and other stakeholders. The DWCP will be presented by the Hon. Minister to ILO Director-General Mr. Guy Ryder in a bilateral discussion during the ILC.

The Hon. Minister recalled his role within Cabinet to improve inter-ministerial coordination on the delivery of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030. He expressed interest in Sri Lanka joining Alliance 8.7 as a ‘pathfinder’ country in the global campaign for eradication of forced labour, modern slavery and child labour.

Country Director Ms. Simrin Singh informed Minister Samaraweera of current and forthcoming activities of the ILO Country Office in Sri Lanka. The Minister accepted an invitation to visit ILO projects in the Vanni and Ratnapura districts on the economic empowerment of conflicted affected communities and on climate and disaster resilience respectively in the coming months.
