    A significant step in the socio-economic recovery of Vavuniya North took place on 24 January 2012, with the official handing over of the re-equipped Multipurpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) Vavuniya North Rice Mill in Nedunkerny.

    A Judicial Colloquium on Human Trafficking & Forced Labour was held from 7-9th August with the participation of 65 Judges. Human Trafficking is gaining increased global attention as a transnational organized crime. The profits generated from trafficking in human beings are significantly high, thereby making it one of the most lucrative criminal industries in the world.

  4. Vavuniya North Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society to support more than 2,000 paddy farmers

    The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS) of Vavuniya North have joined forces to re-tool a major rice milling operation damaged during the years of Sri Lanka’s civil conflict.

  5. ILO Country Director Mr Donglin Li Conferred with Pakistan’s Highest Civilian Award

    Pakistan President H.E. Mr Asif Ali Zardari on the occasion of National Day conferred the SITARA-I-QUAID-I-AZAM Civil Award to Mr Donglin Li, former Country Director of International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Country Office for Pakistan, for his excellent services to the people of Pakistan. Mr Li is the present Country Director of the ILO Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Investiture Ceremony for the Awards took place on 23 March 2011 at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, hosted by H.E. Ms Seema Illahi Baloch, the High Commissioner of Pakistan.

  6. Tripartite seminar on the eight core conventions of the ILO in Male - Republic of Maldives

    The ILO Colombo in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resources, Youth and Sports convened a tripartite seminar in Male on the eight core conventions of the ILO with the aim of identifying ways forward for ratification. The inaugural session was attended by the Vice-president, the Minister for Human Resources, Youth and Sports, the Minister for Economic Development and the Attorney General.

  5. Sri Lanka celebrates ILO’s 90 years working for social justice

    The ILO Country Office in Sri Lanka celebrated the 90th anniversary of the creation of the ILO with a number of high-level activities. In August 2008, a tripartite steering committee comprising of the Government, ILO, Employers’ Federation of Ceylon (EFC) and the workers’ organizations was established under the chairpersonship of the Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower, for planning the events in lieu of the ILO’s 90th anniversary.

    The ILO Office in Sri Lanka being a technical corporation agency seeks to enhance the capacity of employers, workers and the Ministry of Labour Relations and Manpower (MOLR&MP) to plan and implement policies and programmes for prevention of HIV/AIDS in workplaces through its ILO/USDOL International HIV/AIDS Workplace Education Program.
