Decent Work Country Programme task force meets in Jaffna

The 6th Task Force meeting of Sri Lanka's Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) 2018- 2022 was chaired by Mr. D.M.S. Abeyagunawardana, Secretary to the Ministry of Skills Development, Employment and Labour Relations, with the participation of the ILO's tripartite constituents and other government representatives, and on 11-13 February 2020 in the Northern Province

Colombo (ILO News) – The constituents reviewed quarterly progress and concurrent challenges in relation to DWCP Pillar 1 on Creation of sustainable, inclusive and decent employment; Pillar 3 on Rights at Work for All; and Enabling Outcome 4 on Greater knowledge and data generation. The discussion on Pillar 2: Better Governance of the Labour Market was rescheduled for discussion in Colombo.

A presentation on on the ILO's intervention in building the resilience of agricultural producers to drought, through renovation of four tanks (artificial reservoirs) in Kilinochchi district, was well received by the Task-Force, which endorsed its replication elsewhere in Sri Lanka.


The President of the Yarlpanam Chamber of Commerce, Mr K. Vignesh, briefed the constituents on challenges faced by the private sector in the Northern Province and requested their support for the necessary policy and institutional changes to stimulate entrepreneurship and employment generation.

The constituents visited fishing cooperative and crab processing factory in Poonakary, Killinochchi

The constituents visited a farming cooperative in Palaly East and a fishing cooperative and crab processing factory in Poonakary -- both of which are assisted by the ILO's Local Economic Empowerment through Economic Development and Reconciliation (LEED+) project with the support of the Government of Australia and the Government of Norway.

Northern Province Governor, Mrs P. S. M. Charles received a delegation of Task-Force members and requested a technical briefing on the ILO's application of the value chain approach in small and medium enterprises.
The constituents visited a farming cooperative in Palaly East

This exposure visit familiarised the constituents with the local context and strategic approach of the ILO in the post-conflict Northern Province and the application of the DWCP in relation to employment and decent work for all.
