National initiative made possible with support from the ILO under the UN Multi-Partner Trust Fund

As the second wave of COVID-19 continues to impact workplaces around the globe, occupational safety and health (OSH) has been recognized as a key component in every effort to build back better from the pandemic.

In Belize, special effort has been made to identify and reduce the risks faced by workers and employers through a collaborative national public awareness campaign developed and implemented by the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) and the National Trade Union Congress of Belize (NTUCB) with support from the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Under the tagline “a safe and healthy workplace is a better workplace,” the six week promotion launched in December 2020 to develop knowledge and create awareness on how to create and maintain safe and healthy work environments in the context of COVID-19. Additionally, it will contribute to ensure adaptation that supports resilience, continuity of businesses and to build trust with clients.

“The ILO is pleased to partner with the BCCI and NTUCB to create awareness and provide advice to build safe and healthy workplace practices that protect workers and encourage good public behaviour at large,” explained Ariel Pino, ILO Caribbean Social Protection and Occupational Safety and Health Specialist. “The campaign we have developed and implemented also seeks to foster bipartite dialogue and support both organizations in their efforts to deliver quality and relevant services to their members on OSH.”

Featuring a series of nine television, radio, and print public service announcements, the campaign will run across national broadcasters and newspapers until the end of January 2021. Also included are guidance pamphlets and infographics that have been distributed to workers’ and employers’ organizations across the country. All materials were produced in English and Spanish to ensure as wide a reach as possible across the population.

“To combat the virus we must each take personal responsibility; The BCCI is appreciative of the support of the ILO to assist in developing this public awareness campaign in an effort to effect behavioral change,” said
Kim Aikman, Chief Executive Officer of the BCCI.

Supported within the framework of the project “COVID-19 response to vulnerable populations and frontline workers in Belize” being implemented by the United Nations (UN), the campaign was made possible through funding from the Multi-Partner Trust Fund (UN MPTF).
