The creation of green jobs and decent work in the framework of Guyana's Low-Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) will be one of the main avenues of support provided by the International Labour Office through the Decent Work Country Programme for Guyana.

A three-day Workshop on Green Jobs as they relate to Guyana's LCDS was convened on 6-8 July 2010 at the Regency Suites Hotel, Georgetown to jumpstart work in this area. Held jointly by the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security and the ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean, the Workshop highlighted the ILO's Green Jobs Initiative and focused on the concept of green jobs and employment opportunities in Guyana.

Green jobs are jobs which reduce the environmental impact of enterprises and economic sectors ultimately to levels that are sustainable. They include jobs that help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption, de-carbonize the economy and avoid the generation of waste and pollution.

Guyana's Low-Carbon Development Strategy is an innovative approach to combating climate change while simultaneously promoting economic growth and development. Its components include the following: investment in low-carbon economic infrastructure; investment and employment in low-carbon economic sectors; sustainably managing forest-based economic sectors, in particular forestry and mining; and investment in communities and human capital.

The Workshop sessions were facilitated by Ms. Ana Sanchez, Climate Change Specialist, ILO's Employment Sector, Geneva, Switzerland and Dr. Reynold Simons, Senior Specialist for Employment and Labour Market Policies, ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean. Dr. Ana Teresa Romero, Director, ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean addressed the Opening Session and chaired the Round Table discussion. The feature address was delivered by the Honourable Manzoor Nadir, Minister of Labour, who actively participated in the proceedings.

Persons invited to the Workshop included Shyam Nokta, Head of the President’s Office of Climate Change, Dr. Andrew Bishop, Chief Executive Officer, Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission, representatives of the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security and other Ministries; representatives of the Food and Agriculture Organisation and the United Nations Development Programme, the Consultative Association of Guyanese Industry (CAGI); Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Guyana (FITUG) and Guyana Trades Union Congress (GTUC).

Guyana is the first Caribbean country to introduce a Low-Carbon Development Strategy and has been receiving international recognition for its efforts in combating climate change. President Bharrat Jagdeo, was recently presented with the 2010 Champions of the Earth Award by the United Nations Environmental Programme.
