PORT OF SPAIN (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization, Office for the Caribbean has launched CARIBLEX, a new database of labour legislation of ILO member States of the English- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean.

Available online, the database contains many of the full texts of national labour laws from Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

At this stage, emphasis has been placed on legislation pertaining to the subjects covered by the CARICOM Model Labour Laws:
  1. Termination of employment;
  2. Registration, status and recognition of trade unions and employers' organizations;
  3. Equality of opportunity and non-discrimination in employment; and
  4. Occupational Safety and Health and the working environment.
CARICOM adopted Model Labour Laws under these four subject areas in 1995 and 1997 with technical assistance from the ILO.

The database presents national labour laws by country and by subject. It also contains a powerful search engine that enables users to conduct more detailed searches on specific subjects as required.

The database will be a useful tool for governments, employers, workers, lawyers and investors, particularly in the context of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, involving the free movement of labour across borders.

Funding for the development of the database was provided by the Labour Program of the Government of Canada.
