ILO and UWI Centre for Gender and Development Studies to launch report on Reconciling work and family

The report provides information on workers' experiences, particularly women, of negotiating work and family responsibilities and implications for gender equality and poverty in Trinidad and Tobago. It uses data, interviews and policy reviews to examine major trends and issues as well as offers recommendations for action, including measures to be taken by the government, employers and trade unions.

PORT OF SPAIN (ILO News) - The International Labour Organization, Subregional Office for the Caribbean and the UWI Centre for Gender and Development Studies will jointly host the launch of the ILO report "Reconciling work and family: Issues and Policies in Trinidad and Tobago" on Tuesday 22 July 2008 at 10:00a.m. at the UWI Learning Resource Centre, St. Augustine Campus.

The report provides information on workers' experiences, particularly women, of negotiating work and family responsibilities and implications for gender equality and poverty in Trinidad and Tobago. It uses data, interviews and policy reviews to examine major trends and issues as well as offers recommendations for action, including measures to be taken by the government, employers and trade unions.

This study is one of a number of country studies commissioned by the ILO's Conditions of Work and Employment Programme, within the context of international labour standards that address work-family issues, namely the Workers with Family Responsibilities Convention, No. 156 and the Maternity Protection Convention, No. 183.

Professor Rhoda Reddock and Dr. Yvonne Bobb-Smith, authors of the publication, will present the report at the launch, to be followed by a panel and open discussion. Panellists will include representatives of the Ministry of Labour and Small and Micro Enterprise Development; Ministry of Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs; Ministry of the Attorney General; National Trade Union Centre; Employers' Consultative Association of Trinidad and Tobago and the Network of NGOs of Trinidad and Tobago for the Advancement of Women.
