ILO Training for labour inspectors

The United Nation's International Labour Organization (ILO), Subregional Office for the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development, Culture, Labour and Electoral Matters, St. Vincent and the Grenadines will host a training workshop for labour inspectors from across the region.

PORT OF SPAIN (ILO News) - The United Nation's International Labour Organization (ILO), Subregional Office for the Caribbean, in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development, Culture, Labour and Electoral Matters, St. Vincent and the Grenadines will host a training workshop for labour inspectors from across the region. The workshop will be held on 17-19 July 2007 at the Sunset Shores Hotel, Kingstown.

The Honourable René Baptiste, Minister of Urban Development, Culture, Labour and Electoral Matters, St. Vincent and the Grenadines is expected to deliver the keynote address at the Opening Ceremony carded for 17 July 2007 at 8:30a.m.

Over 20 labour inspectors of CARICOM Member States and English- and Dutch-speaking overseas territories will participate in this introductory three-day workshop.

Labour inspectors are an integral part of the system of labour inspection which serves to ensure that there is compliance with labour laws and related regulations designed to protect all employees, including their occupational safety and health, as well as the working environment. They also provide advisory services to employers with a view to promoting compliance and improvement at the workplace.

At the end of the workshop, labour inspectors will know the requirements of labour inspection based on national and international standards. They will have a good understanding of the functions of labour inspectors, as well as the procedures for planning, conducting, reporting and following up on inspections. .

The Facilitator for the workshop is Labour-Management Consultant, Samuel J. Goolsarran, former ILO Senior Specialist on Industrial Relations and Labour Administration at the ILO Subregional Office for the Caribbean.

This workshop is the second in a series of four ILO regional training workshops designed mainly for labour officials. A training workshop on Industrial Relations was recently held in St. Kitts and Nevis; another workshop on Advanced Industrial Relations will be conducted later in 2007; and the final in the series will be held early in 2008. The subject will be Conciliation and Mediation.

The International Labour Organization is the United Nations specialized agency responsible for setting and supervising the application of international labour standards. International labour standards are essential for providing opportunities for women and men to obtain decent and productive work in conditions of freedom, equity, security and human dignity.
