    Ukraine commits to achieve gender equality and joins Biarritz Partnership with ILO support

    The Biarritz Partnership is an international initiative for equal rights and opportunities for all. It was created to strengthen the responsibility of the G7 countries and to consolidate efforts of other countries in gender equality. The ILO assisted Ukraine in the accession process by providing technical support in two areas: maternity protection and pay equity.

    Where innovation meets job-creation: Centre for Entrepreneurship opens with ILO support in Sarajevo

    The new Centre for Entrepreneurship, opened on 4 September, 2020, provides long-term support to young entrepreneurs as they start their businesses and create new jobs. In the first round of support, eight of them launched their business ventures in the area of Information and Communication Technologies and creative industries. They are the first of a total of five groups of young entrepreneurs who will benefit from the EU4Business project in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the form of technical support and grants to turn business ideas into registered companies.

    ILO/EBRD rapid assessment finds coronavirus crisis cost Serbia equivalent to 510.000 full-time jobs

    In Serbia, the coronavirus pandemic has led to a decline in working hours during the second quarter of 2020, equivalent to the loss of 510,000 full-time jobs. However, by offering the most generous and comprehensive economic package among the Western Balkan economies, the Serbian government contained “the expansion of poverty”, according to the new rapid assessment report, joint work of the ILO and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

    Enterprises during the pandemic

    Rapid assessments on the impact of COVID-19 on enterprises in four Western Balkan countries reveal significant disruption and job loss but also readiness to resume operations

    The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic and related containment measures caused significant losses and disruptions for enterprises in the Western Balkans. To assess the challenges and needs of the business sector and identify relevant support measures, Employers and Business Membership Organizations in the region carried out a survey among their member enterprises. A total of 1600 enterprises responded to the survey between 8 April and 11 May 2020 in Albania, North Macedonia, in Bosnia and Herzegovina (Republika Srpska Entity) and Serbia. The survey was based on the ILO “Enterprise survey tool: Assessing the needs of enterprises resulting from COVID-19” and was conducted in partnership with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).

    Youth and COVID-19 in Poland: Impacts on jobs, education, rights and mental well-being

    Between April and May 2020, the ILO and its partners in the Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth (DJY) conducted a global survey on the impacts of COVID-19 on the lives of young people (aged 18-29) with regard to employment, education, rights, mental well-being and social activism. The study finds the impact of the pandemic on young people to be systematic, deep and disproportionate.

The interviews reveal they did not only lose a significant amount of their work and income because of the lockdown measures, but also have to deal with work and life imbalance, increased stress and uncertainty about the future.

    ITUC Global Rights Index 2020 shows workers’ rights violations occur too often in Central and Eastern Europe

    The International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) released its yearly Global Rights Index in June 2020. This year, the report affirms that the violations of workers’ rights is increasing globally, and is the highest in seven years. For Central and Eastern Europe the ratings indicate that the situation is more stable than globally, but many workers in the region still lack access to rights.
