Improving workplace safety in the Republic of Moldova

A recently completed project has contributed to a better workplace safety in the Republic of Moldova by improving the knowledge base of Moldovan workers on occupational safety and health.

The project provided support to the National Trade Union Confederation of the Republic of Moldova (NTUCM) from December 2014 to December 2015 in upgrading the skills of persons responsible for occupational safety and health in different economic entities and trade union structures.

Three round tables were organized with representatives of branch trade unions on the situation of occupational safety in different regions of the country.

18 trainings were conducted for 520 occupational safety and health experts from 27 regions and districts of Moldova on relevant ILO and EU standards. Special attention was paid to risk assessment and the prevention of workplace accidents.

Moldovan experts exchanged their experience with their Romanian partners on the harmonization of national legislation with EU directives and requirements, on modern tools and methods for assessing risk factors and how to perform inspection activities.

The ILO also supported the translation and publication of ILO conventions ratified by Republic of Moldova and a list of EU directives and other European acts.

The final tripartite evaluation conference took place in Chisinau, on 23 October 2015, where participants highlighted the usefulness of new competencies acquired and appreciated the documents produced.

The role of the ILO supervisory mechanisms was also highlighted in improving the observance of international standards.

Finally, the participants adopted a position paper of the Moldovan Trade Union Confederation on the future occupational safety and health policies to be followed in order to enhance the compliance of national legislation and practice with the related International Labour Standards.

The project was implemented by the ILO in the framework of Norway-ILO Partnership Programme 2012-15, as a sub-component of the global project entitled Trade Unions for Social Justice – phase II.
