Adam Keri, Legal Expert of LIGA Trade Unions about the situation of women in the world of work today

ILO DWT/CO-Budapest marks the International Women's Day in 2014 by collecting the views of workers, employers and governments on progress achieved and challenges ahead for women at work in the region.

Statement | 07 March 2014
LIGA is deeply concerned about the situation of women at workplace both worldwide and in Hungary. Women face various obstacles in the labor market such as increased impediments at admission and promotion, lowered remuneration, the existence of the so called glass ceiling, the possibility of harassment and susceptibility to dismissal. We firmly believe that the labor force participation rate should be increased which is only possible if women receive equal pay for equal work, if discrimination is strictly banned and if no stigma attaches to those who would like to return to work.

The situation of women has tremendously improved which was preceded by a change of attitude. The legislative branch recognized the need for increased protection and the value of equality. This also means that more and more individuals recognize that the decision to enter the labor market or return to work is a fairly private one. We all have to be aware of the dual role women play in life: in family and at workplace.

Finally, we think it is crucial to lay emphasis on education (value oriented way of thinking) and the awareness of rights. Unions also share responsibility regarding these fields. What employers are concerned, they should not only aim to adhere to minimum standards set forth by domestic and international legal instruments but also apply heightened protection laid down in their own policies.
