ILO Director-General: “The Luxembourg social model is a guarantee for social peace”

During an official visit to Luxembourg, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder, the Luxembourg Prime Minister, Minister of Labour and social partners emphasized the common priorities of the ILO and Luxembourg.

During his visit, Guy Ryder met with the Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, the Minister of Labour, Nicolas Schmit, the President of the Economic and Social Council, Gary Kneip, and the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Mars Di Bartolomeo.

The exchanges focussed on the role of the ILO in a globalized world, the improvement of international labour standards, the development of social dialogue and the youth employment and social situation in Luxembourg and the European Union.

The Luxembourg Prime Minister underlined his commitment to sustaining genuine social dialogue, and that combating unemployment is one of the government’s top priorities.

Guy Ryder reminded that Luxembourg and the ILO are natural partners and share common values and priorities. “The Luxembourg social model, based on tripartism, is a guarantee for social peace”, he said. He expressed his deep appreciation for Luxembourg's support to the ILO.

The Minister of Labour, Mr Nicolas Schmit, confirmed the intention of Luxembourg to ratify the Employment Policy Convention (N°122), the Tripartite Consultation (International Labour Standards) Convention (N° 144), and the Private Employment Agencies Convention (N° 181). Guy Ryder thanked Mr Schmit for his strong support to the ILO mandate and agenda.
