Leveraging globalization for decent jobs

At an Infopoint organized by the European Commission about "Making trade work for inclusive growth: the role of skills development", Claire Courteille, Director ILO-Brussels, stressed that trade opening must be complemented by properly designed domestic policies, including labour market and social protection policies.

“The ILO has developed a number of tools to analyze what can be the best policy mix set within trade and labour market policies in a particular context. What are the elements of public policy that can maximize the positive impact, and what elements are needed to mitigate the negative impact.”

“The ILO believes that the priority of trade policy should be the creation of decent jobs. It is our ambition to provide tools that generate more evidence on the complex relationship between trade and employment, and to provide evidence-based advice to the governments and social partners.” said Ms Courteille. She also stated that in order to meet this ambition, the cooperation with the European Commission on these issues since 2008 has proved extremely useful.

David Cheong, Trade and Employment Specialist at ILO, shared some of the research findings from the EU-ILO project "Strengthening the impact on Employment of Sector and Trade Policies".

The event took place on 30 June 2015 and was organized by DG DEVCO in the context of the European Year for Development, focussing on sustainable green growth, decent jobs and businesses during the month of June.

More than 45 participants attended the event.
