News | 31 May 2013

On 23 May 2013, EU Trade Commissioner Karel De Gucht addressed the plenary session of the European Parliament (EP) on labour conditions and health and safety in Bangladesh factories. De Gucht welcomed the ILO activities in Bangladesh and underlined the importance of international labour standards and the value of ILO-EC cooperation in the field of improving occupational safety and health worldwide.

The EP plenary session subsequently adopted a new Resolution on “Labour conditions and health and safety standards following the recent factory fires and building collapse in Bangladesh”. On 28 May, EU Commissioner Karel De Gucht and the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh Dr. Dipu Moni issued a joint statement expressing their readiness to work together.

Both the EP Resolution and the EC-Bangladesh statement explicitly support the ILO activities and its mission to Bangladesh as well as the resulting ILO-induced joint statement of tripartite partners.
