The ILO Office welcomes this important development and hopes that this roadmap will result in concrete orientations and initiatives. The social dimension will be part of the roadmap to be developed by European Council President Herman van Rompuy by June 2013 in close consultation with the stakeholders. The European Council conclusions equally highlighted the key importance of employment for the EMU.

The European Council conclusions were preceded by proposals of the European Parliament on the EMU (see Report by rapporteur Marianne Thyssen, EPP, BE) calling for employment and social benchmarks and a social dimension, referring to ILO instruments, frameworks and objectives such as the Social Protection Floors, Fundamental Rights and principles at Work, Social Dialogue and the ILO Call for Action on Youth Employment.

At the EESC plenary session of 16 and 17 January 2013, the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy called for EESC proposals on the social dimension of the EMU.
