More than ten years after the ILO published its first Global Report on Forced Labour in 2001, data on the prevalence of the crime and the profile and number of victims are still hard to find. While activities against forced labour and human trafficking have multiplied, progress on gathering the data needed to design and evaluate policies and programmes has lagged behind.
In 2005, the ILO published its first global estimate of forced labour. Since then, the ILO has worked intensively to develop new methods for gathering data. On 10 July 2012, the ILO launches its second estimate of forced labour, with particular attention to the situation in the EU-27. This new estimate is based on a refined methodology, and has involved the collection of thousands of cases of forced labour and human trafficking reported over the period 2002-2011.
The launch of the estimate will be hosted by member of the European Parliament Ms Edit Bauer, Co-Rapporteur on the EU Directive to prevent and combat trafficking in human beings and protect its victims.
