I am terribly saddened at the news of the deaths of so many people, and miners at their place of work, in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais. On behalf of the ILO, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. We are with them in their sorrow.

Our thoughts are also with those who were injured and whose properties were destroyed. I recognize the ongoing efforts and trust they will be provided with all necessary assistance. We also extend our support to those involved in the rescue operations and commend them for their difficult task.

This tragedy is a sad reminder of the crucial importance of a functioning system to guarantee occupational safety and health for miners and protection for their communities. The ILO stands ready to provide continued support to its tripartite Brazilian constituents to ensure the safety of workers and prevent future accidents.
