GENEVA (ILO News) – Sterling Apparel Manufacturing has joined a programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Organization of Employers (IOE) in Jordan to guide companies in tackling child labour, including in their supply chains.

The participation of Sterling brings valuable insights to the project and is an example of effective public-private collaboration to prevent child labour.

The garment sector in Jordan has grown rapidly after the signing of two agreements with the United States: the Qualifying Industrial Zones (QIZs) and Free Trade Agreement, which grant garments "Made in Jordan" duty free access to the US. Access to the US market has been at the centre of the recent success of the Jordanian garment industry.

The ILO/IOE project focuses on fundamental labour rights in line with the United Nations’ “Protect, Respect, and Remedy” Framework and its Guiding Principles. It thus provides guidance to companies seeking a proactive, rights-based approach to preventing child labour.

The ILO and IOE welcome the participation of Sterling Apparel Manufacturing in the project and look forward to developing together further sectoral research and sharing contextual challenges and good practices with the wider garment sector.
