AMMAN, Jordan – The International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Better Work Jordan (BWJ) programme is tomorrow hosting a meeting of key international brands sourcing from the Kingdom’s garment industry.

The value of Jordan's garment exports has been steadily increasing since 2009, and reached a record high of 1.2 billion USD in 2012. Recent research suggests that the domestic value-added of the Jordanian garment industry is 36.9 per cent of the industry's total output.

Eight international clothing brands will be attending BWJ's fifth annual International Buyers' Forum including Wal-Mart, Gap, Nike, Sears, Jones Apparel, Hanesbrand, L.L. Bean and Li & Fung. The forum aims to work towards a consensus among government, the trade union, buyers and factories on several key issues related to the working conditions in the industry including fire safety, worker dormitory standards, discrimination, working hours and the recruitment of migrant workers.

The forum will be opened by HE the Minister of Labour, HE Ambassador of the United States to Jordan and the Deputy Director of the ILO Regional Office for Arab States.

According to the Programme Manager of BWJ, Phillip Fishman: “The agreement of key stakeholders – government, factories, workers, and the international buyers – on how to tackle the remaining challenges facing this sector will set the stage for a more stable and competitive industry, one that produces higher value-added garments in accordance with international labour standards and contributes even more to Jordan’s economy and its people.”

Better Work Jordan is part of the global Better Work programme which aims to improve working conditions and promote competitiveness in Jordan’s apparel industry, by offering customized advisory and training services to factories to address their individual needs.
