COVID-19: The multiple and protracted crises impacting labour markets in Arab States- A regional initiative (Event)

A virtual event, bringing together international development and humanitarian partners and regional tripartite constituents, will discuss findings of assessments on the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable workers and enterprises in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq.

Rapid assessments exploring the impact of COVID-19 on vulnerable workers and enterprises in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq were conducted by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Fafo Institute for Labour and Social Research, in collaboration with a range of humanitarian and development partners, including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Cash Consortium for Iraq (CCI,) and Lebanon’s Livelihoods Sector Core Group.

A virtual event, bringing together international development and humanitarian partners and regional tripartite constituents -  representatives of governments, employers, and workers - will be held to present key findings and hold discussions, exchange knowledge, good practices and lessons learnt from the region.

The assessments shed light on vulnerable populations and enterprises in the three Arab States, which been hit by multiple challenges in recent years, including the influx of refugees to neighbour countries, high youth unemployment, low female participation rates, poverty and high informality.

They provide key country-specific recommendations for immediate action and longer-term policy measures.

The studies are part of the first round of assessments, looking at the immediate economic impact of the pandemic on vulnerable workers, households and businesses has been completed. Follow-up surveys, examining the longer-term impact of the crisis are being prepared for the coming months in the three countries.
