Working towards Decent and Sustainable Job Creation in the Agro-Food sector in Lebanon

Within the framework of the ILO Project on the “Role of Employers Organizations in Decent and Sustainable Job Creation in the Agro-Food sector”, the ILO and the Association of Lebanese Industrialists hold a round table meeting for national stakeholders in the Agriculture and Agro-food Industries and Cooperatives in Lebanon.

The ILO Regional Office for Arab States (ILO-ROAS), in collaboration with the Association of Lebanese Industrialists, will hold a round-table discussion for high-level representatives from Lebanon’s public and private institutions linked to the agriculture and agro-food sectors to promote social dialogue among participants on common issues and challenges facing both sectors. The discussion will highlight their role in advocating for the development of a comprehensive national vision for the agriculture and agro-food sectors, in addition to their potential in creating sustainable and decent jobs across the country, in particular in rural areas.

Agricultural Economic experts and the ILO ROAS Senior ACT/EMP Specialist are facilitating the discussion among the 40 participants, setting the stage through recent studies and surveys conducted within the framework of the ILO Project on the “Role of Employers Organizations in Decent and Sustainable Job Creation in the Agro-Food sector”, with a focus on the skills mismatch between demand and supply, as well as the legislative reform needed for the cooperatives sector in Lebanon to flourish.

The event aims to draw conclusions and come up with recommendations for needed policy reform and coordinated support for both sectors, ensuring sound inter-linkages and synergies are created, leading to economic growth and development including creation of decent and sustainable jobs.
