Migrant Domestic Workers

Migrant domestic workers in Lebanon bridge cultural differences through culinary and educational initiatives

The ILO organizes a cultural integration event to bolster migrant domestic workers’ rights in Lebanon through interactive education and marketing cuisine from migrant workers’ countries of origin.

The International Labour Organization will support the launch of a catering line at a farmers market and a rights-based educational board game in order to increase understanding of migrant domestic worker rights and roles in Lebanese society. Culinary goods from migrant domestic workers’ countries of origin will be marketed as Atayeb Chighel El Beit (Tastiest Home Cooking in Arabic) in collaboration with Souk El Tayeb, an open-air weekly farmers market held at three different locations in Lebanon. On the same day, the ILO will launch educational board game entitled Bladi Bladek (My Country is Your Country in Arabic) aimed at raising children’s’ awareness on the countries of origin of domestic worker and their rights.

The event is open to the public and will include free food tasting, live shows and children’s activates which include the Bladi Baladek game. A press brunch will also be attended by representatives from the European Union, the ILO, Lebanese ministries, diplomatic missions, international organisations, as well as workers organisations and civil society.

This initiative is part of ILO’s"Promoting Rights of Women Domestic Workers in Lebanon (PROWD)" project funded by the European Union.
