Jordan’s Ministry of Health inspectors to mull role in national plan to combat child labour

Health ministry inspectors participate in an ILO workshop to examine how they can contribute to Jordan’s National Framework to Combat Child Labour.

Occupational safety inspectors from Jordan’s Ministry of Health will attend a workshop to discuss ways they can contribute to the National Framework to Combat Child Labour (NFCL). The workshop will highlight potential areas of deeper cooperation between ministry inspectors, including the Revised Hazardous Work List, which identifies potentially hazardous economic sectors children under the age of 18 should not be allowed to work in. At present, the the NFCL does not define a role for the Ministry of Health. However, stakeholders agree there is a need to identify how its resources can be integrated with those of other ministries to help combat child labour in Jordan.

The NFCL was adopted by the Jordanian government in August 2011 and is being implemented with technical support from the ILO. The roles and responsibilities of the ministries of labour, education, and social development to identify cases of child labour, withdraw children from work, monitor cases of child labour, as well as provide children with education and social services are outlined in the NFCL.

The workshop is part of the ILO project entitled “Moving Towards a Child Labour Free Jordan,” which provides technical support to government, social partners and civil society on the practical implementation of the NFCL. The project is funded by the United States Department of Labour.
