Yemen reveals results of first national child labour survey

Government, worker, employer, civil society and donor representatives will discuss the findings of the 2010 National Child Labour Survey in Yemen and chart the way forward for future programmes to combat child labour.

The results of Yemen’s first national child labour survey will be revealed on Monday (January 14) at an event that brings together more than seventy government, worker, employer, civil society and donor representatives in Sana’a.

Participants will discuss the report “Working Children in the Republic of Yemen: The results of the 2010 National Child Labour Survey” and chart the way forward for future programmes to combat child labour.

The national child labour survey was carried out by the Central Statistical Organization of Yemen, in collaboration with the ILO’s International Programme on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), the Social Development Fund and UNICEF. It covers over 23,500 children in approximately 9,500 households.

Children aged 5 to 17 constitute 34.3 per cent of Yemen’s population (7.7 million children), an estimated 21 per cent of whom are employed (1.6 million).
