Discrimination against People Living with HIV within Healthcare Settings in China

Based on the interview responses and related documents, this report describes the current state of discrimination by medical institutions against people living with HIV, analyses the underlying factors behind this discrimination and provides a set of policy recommendations designed to better protect the medical rights of people living with HIV.

In order to identify the key factors behind differential access and treatment of people living with HIV to medical services, the STD and AIDS Prevention and Control Center of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (NCAIDS) and the International Labour Organization (ILO) undertook a joint qualitative research project in August 2010. In-depth interviews were conducted with 20 medical professionals from four designated HIV hospitals and seven non-designated hospitals in five provinces (Henan, Beijing, Guangxi, Yunnan and Gansu).
