  • About the ILO in China

    The ILO Country Office for China and Mongolia opened in Beijing in 1984, shortly after the start of the country’s reform process. Since this period, there have been significant changes in what is now the world’s third largest economy. China’s once planned labour market is giving way to a market-oriented system which has resulted in a number of social challenges These challenges include: labour and employment dimensions of China’ economic transformation; the widening of income inequalities; more diverse needs of vulnerable groups – particularly those who face difficulty finding work - and the need to develop more high-skilled workers to remain competitive within the global economy.
