Migration is a global phenomenon which is growing in scope and complexity. In 2010, some 214 million people — 3 per cent of the world's population — lived outside their country of origin. The majority of migrants cross borders in search of better economic and social opportunities. Of the hundreds of millions of people living outside their countries of birth, the ILO estimates that almost 90 per cent are migrant workers and their families.
