This paper looks at the trends and patterns of this internal migration and its consequences on the rights and welfare of rural migrant workers and their families. It argues that rural urban migration has been crucial to China’s rapid economic growth and that the provision of decent work to rural migrant workers is needed to narrow inequalities and achieve more balanced growth in the country.
